Can someone please shed some light on my issues. This damn DA is testing my patience. I’ve searched and read every thread and the manual but I just need some plain good advice. Thanks
About a month ago I installed the Revo-front camber kit and new bushings on the upper bracket. Everything was going fine until I realized that my CV boots were ripped and the outer CV fell apart on both sides. And if this has happened to you before you know that it’s impossible to align the 3 bearings back into the inner CV side.
So, I replaced both CV axles with brand new ones. While i was replacing the axles I also replaced the tie rods. Note: that I still have the old rack.
After I did this I began to get a shudder upon acceleration. I know what the possible causes are and have read every thread. I have checked the Hubs, i hope it’s not the axles since they are new, tires, etc. You get the point so that’s my first problem. Is the best thing to do is trial & error?
About 3 weeks ago I replaced the steering rack. And it was fine for the first week but now my suspension has completely gone to hell. It wanders like crazy, the steering wheel stays straight but even just crossing lane lines it will wander a little bit. I also saw that my passenger side tie rod boot was ripped and grease was coming out. Could this be one possible culprit? Also, is tightening up the rack the best thing to do? The 2nd problem.
When i brake the wheel vibrates back and forth. And when I get close to stopping I can feel where the high spots are on the rotor. I know i probable need to get my rotors turned to fix this problem and def. new pads and probably a brake system flush. The 3rd problem
My main question is, I don’t feel like replacing every single thing to try to fix my steering problems. What do you guys suggest? I have the helms manual with me but I get overwhelmed with the numerous problems and possible causes for these problems. It seems like a rolling effect because the problems come with more problems. And I know everyone has the same problems and sorry for the repost on some of these issues. Sometimes it almost seems best to move on and sell the thing. Thanks for your input and please let me know if you might need more information. Sorry so long.
i wouldn’t really know but putting the bearings back on a popped axle is easy… all u gotta do is take off the boot and pull them out on each one, wiggle it around until it goes poof (drops right in)… but gl w/ it… i still need to change out my tie rods…
Did you get a wheel alignment after you replaced your rack and pinion? I replaced my this past weekend and got a 4 wheel alignment right after and the car feels great.
sorry to bring this back up, but im kinda having the same problem. i replaced my rack and pinion then got a 4 wheel alignment. the steering wheel is not centereted and feels like it wanders a bit especially on the freeway. anyone know what might be causing this?
If you steering wheel isn’t lined up then whoever did your alignment didn’t do a good job. When I put new tie rods in my steering wheel was way off and went and had it aligned and it was fine after that. Make sure you mention it to them next time you go in. I’d also recommend getting a lifetime alignment so you can get it aligned whenever you change a suspension setting. There’s a lot of things that could contribute but i’ve finally realized that my car is still running and it’s 17 years old…not everything is going to be right. Slowly but surely i’m replacing suspension components. It takes patience to have an old car. L8ter man
you say it wanders, does it fell realy lose at the wheel.
Im gonna throw this out there as an idea. Last year i had a remanufacured rack put in and in a little more than a year, the drives side INNER tie rod went out. and it would wonder all over the place, i went through 2 new out rods before i even figured it out.
+1 on the lifetime allignment deal. I know ive got my moneys worth:giggle:
There is a set screw in the rack to tighten it up. Maybe it has backed off?
You say you put a new rack on, drove it 3 weeks, and it started wandering.
Check your power assist, you may be getting power to your steering above the PS cutout speed. (thought it was 5mph, but the helms says to “simulate above 30 mph, bypass…” so maybe it has power steering below 30 mph.
Helms manual 17-18 and 17-21 are the checks for
the rack guide and the speed sensor check.
