ok as some people know i just wrecked my 90 gs. so i got ahold of a 91 ls anfor 300 dollars with no engine a cracked windshield and no drivers window, otherwise complete. i have all of the stuff on my wrecked car that i can salvage. can anybody tell me how to swap these things? thanx for your time
I would not try to do the windshield yourself. It is fully worth paying whatever the glass company wants to come and swap them for you. You have to have a special tool that has a razor blade at a right angle to cut the urathane that holds the windshield in on the back. When the glass guys come to the shop they even have a little slidehammer attachment for theirs because it is so hard. If you screw up the angle of the blade…boom, bye bye windshield or the blade will snap and you could brake your own jaw or end up on your ass. If you push on the windshield and have not cut all the urathane but think you have…bye bye windshield. You also need an adheision promotor of some kind to prep the area you are installing it in plus a big thick bead of new urathane to hold it in.
alright ill get someone to do that. wat does it take to do the side window?
If you mean the drivers side door window, its very easy. Remove the inner door trim and the belt moulding that is on the top of the door next to the glass on the outside (you probably need to take the side mirror off to get the belt moulding off) when you look down where the glass is you will see two stoppers that hold the glass in when you roll it up and down, remove them. I think there is a rubber cap that is part of the weather stripping that you need to move at the back edge of the door as well. Then just roll the window down close to the bottom until you see the two 10mm bolts that hold it to the window regulator, take them out and remove the glass. If you mean the side quarter glass then you are back into urathane I believe. The easy way to tell is to look at the glass and if there is a tinted border all the way around the outside edges then it is urathaned in. The border protects the urathane from the suns rays breaking it down.
no its the driver door window. what tools dod i need cuz i gotta do this in my brothers back yard and he doesnt have tools i gotta bring my own
Philips screwdriver, A ratchet with 8mm,10mm,12mm deep sockets and an extension to be sure you can get everything. If you have an interior trim panel tool then bring it because the clips on the door panel can be tough sometimes but you don’t need it(you could use a flathead screwdriver). When you remove the outer belt moulding look for a small philips screw at one or both ends on the inside of the door edge. If it has the screws in it and you try to pull it off then you could really screw yourself because the belt moulding has steel in it and if you bend it bad it will never look right again. When the screw is out start at the easiest place for you to grab and twist it outwards and pull up. When it lets go in the spot you were holding move down, don’t try to take it off holding just one end.
Yea changing windshield is a bish, but only if u know what ur doing then u can save.
I had a buddy help hold it since i dont have them special sucking cups nto hold my glass down. I use a guitar wire the fine one it works. Just have patient.
