Symptom/Solution thread

since our cars are all at least 10 years old now, we’re used to having maintenance issues with our DA’s. There have been a lot of ignition related problems that I’ve seen on this forum lately, and I’d like to make a thread(this one) where we could list all of these problems, people post who have had these problems and what the solution was. I think this could better help people in the future with finding the solutions to their problems quicker. Here is a brief list of what I’d like people to comment on and of course, anything other than the list would be acceptable.

Ignitor
Distributor
Ignition Coil
Crank Angle Sensor
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
Distributor Cap
Distributor Rotor
Timing is off
Timing Belt slipping

I can’t think of anything else now but of course please post if you want to add anything. And PLEASE this thread is intended for people to post problems they have had, the symptoms of the problem they had, and the post that fixed the problem. I’m going to scour the Assistance boards(give me something to do at work hehe) and try and find posts by people who have found the solution and what the symptoms of the problem they listed were.

Here is Steve aka Redlineintegra’s symptoms for what eventually was found to be a bad ignitor:

My teg is acting up on me, won’t start … it turns over, but just won’t catch … checked the plugs, and they were dry

I checked for spark … no spark from the #1 when I had it out and tried to start it …

what was your car doing when you tried to start it? mine cranks strong, but won’t catch

Turns out it was the ignition coil after all!

and for the same problem described by Zoomintegra…

after testing as per Helms manual suggestions, i knew i was getting POWER to the distributor (turn key to “on” position and test the wires in accordance with helms manual), but i wasn’t getting any spark when i tried to start. starter cranked just fine, and i replaced cap and rotor, but still no spark. after trying about 8 different things to no avail, i finally took it to the dealer, they tested and replaced the igniter and the coil, and she works great now. each part was a little under $100, and it came out to just a bit over 200 bucks for everything (considering tax).

mines doing the same thing so i bought a brand new ditributor and tested my ecu and it still wont kick over. My distributor is getting power plus theres spark coming out but still no fire.???

my car cranks but wont turn over, i have to crank it at least 5 times to get it started. and i just bought a brand new distributor king distributor and it comes with the rotor and cap, so the coil and ignitor should be ok. i still havent checked spark plugs but they’re pretty new, only few months old, so what im going to do is buy a new main fuel relay and see if that fixes the problem and also check my grounds

ok i ordered a new main fuel relay, lets hope it works when it gets here, also going to get my timing set since i havent done it since i put the distributor on.

oh yeah i forgot to add that i have to wait for the beeps to go away before i can start it, it starts everytime if i wait for the beeps to go away. it wont let me start before the beeps

Testing your Main Fuel Relay

1)Turn the Key to the “ON” position, you’ll notice that your “Check Engine”(CEL) light comes on.

2)Now as soon as your “CEL” comes on you’ll hear the Fuel Pump priming,

3)Then about 2 seconds after the “CEL” comes on and the Fuel Pump primes, the “CEL” will turn off. The moment the “CEL” turn off you will hear a “Click” sound, coming around where your coin tray is located (MFR Location).

If nothing happens during steps 2 and 3 after trying up to 5 times:
not hearing the Fuel Pump prime and the “Click”, then your Main Fuel Relay is most likely bad. Pull off and inspect per Helms directions, see note.

If steps 1 through 3 work 5 out of 5 times:
Rule out the Main Fuel Relay

If steps 1 through 3 works about 3 out of 5 trys or works but then doesnt:
It could still be your MFR. I was getting this problem so I bought a new MFR anyways and it solved the problem.

NOTE*
In the HELMs under Chapter 11 pg 119 “PGM-FI Main Realy” you’ll find the Relay Testing section, follow the directions for testing continuity.

#4 not working???// please help

i recently noticed a power loss and my engine started to idle WAY to low like around 500 rpms and somtimes would die so while the engine was running i took out 1 spark plug wire at a time and each one would make the engine almost choke and die except the #4 piston NOTHING happens like the pistons not fireing or somthing it has a new spark plug and wires and new fuel injector and still does nothing and no one knows why anybody have any ideas thanks js

How old is your Distributor Cap? did you check the points there? maybe for some odd reason #4 point is broke or has alot of build up on it.

Check the lil things.

thank you but i already replaced the cap and rotar about a month back didnt work it sparks fine and i know fuel is getting to it because it has a new fuel injector maybe i have no compression or bad timming i dunno

speaking of the DA…

Ok, I have a question. I have recently purchased my first DA, and of course, I love it. :cloud9: Well, I was recently reading thru a WELL known :wink: manual looking for answers and tips, but I found a problem. I actually was looking at a diagram that the manual had for a DA, but my car was missing some of the things that was in the diagram and my car actually has one extra part and I can not figure out what it is. Does anyone know where to get an accurate diagram of what it looks like under a hood of a teg rs da? hopefully that makes sense…

i was driving mine down the street and it just stalled… when i try to start it, it makes funny noises out the exhaust and the intake, tries to start but won’t, i am getting fuel and spark, the timing belt is still intact…

could it have jumped a tooth or a few?

hey i got a similar problem-

my 91 ls/vtec’s idle is really low at times and is bogging (rough idling)…but on top of that, it wont start unless i have my pcv valve to the intake manifold disconnected - i have replaced the pcv valve already… (ihave to stay on the gas for it the motor to turn over and stay on)
and also uses up gas like a crackhead uses up crack, hahaha…
have already replaced map sensor also (tried a map sensor from a crx)

can anyone help? any suggestions?

i just remembered… have you changed your distributor rotor? make sure it is not loose!

did anyone find a solution for the problem? my car idles low, is using up gas like crazy, is smoking but smells like gas, feel like it is running on 2 cylinders, no knocking noises though, sparks plugs looked like the car was really rich. new spark plugs did nothing

Hey i have somewhat a similar problem i have no spark but i have replaced my distributor brand new my car cranks but it just wont start does anyone know what might be the problem?
