Synchronizing Mechanical and Ignition Timing

So it looks like there are four timing marks on my crank pulley, three of them are next to each other and the fourth is off by itself. With the timing belt off, which mark do I line up the timing cover pointer with? Am I trying to get the first piston at TDC on its compression stroke? How do I know if the first piston is on its compression or exhaust stroke?

When setting the cams to TDC, the lobes on both cams of the first piston should be pointing away from each other, right?

Once I get the first piston at the correct position, both cams are at TDC, and the timing belt on, how should I install the distributor? I’m guessing the “slot” on the distributor should be in the same position as the slot on the intake cam.

Working on a 1990 GS, stock B18A1. Any legit help is appreciated!

The one by itself is TDC

Yes that is right you should also see a hole in each cam line up with the hole in the first cam cap on both cams.

It will only fit one way( the slot is off center) and just center the distributor in the timming adjusting slot and you will close enought to start the car.
