I might have gotten ripped… is syncromesh the light brown color of regular motor oil? Does is smell strong like heavy gear oil? Is it somewhat thicker than 10W30?
what did the bottle say
it smells kind of sweet and it is light. heavy gear oil usually goes into rear ends, not transmissions.
i gave the mechanic the syncromesh… but I think he put normal gear oil in. I never opened the syncromesh bottle to see the difference.
it looks like moter oil but he should have used the w oil bc its like 2.2 or 3.2 quarts some one conferm
tell him to give you the leftover oil as the guy above said ( i’m not sure) the car only takes about 2.5 or 3.5 bottles. i am fairly sure it takes about 3.5 bottles.
I use GM Synchromesh Friction Modified, and it smells fucking nasty straight out of the bottle. And it looks like synthetic 5w30 to me… but ya tell him to give you the left over oil. You couldn’t do the change yourself? thats a shame…
opo cmon man not every one has somewhere to do it and or has the knoldage not trying to bust but cmon man no shame in some one else doing it i live in apartments and they wont let us do it here
the whole story is that i had him replace the clutch, flywheel, steering rack, and other stuff… i wasn’t going to do all that myself. but after i got it back the transmission was too stiff when cold… damn hard to move the lever into 2nd (no grinds… just stiff). So I just drained it and put in 10W30 and the shifting is so light compared to before. in my other post i mentioned the weird problem that the car moved forward while in NEUTRAL and clutch out. Now with the oil change that problem is gone too… so I highly suspect he put gear oil and not syncromesh. The oil i drained is clean but nasty smelling…not sweet at all. I had this done a few months ago… so the bottles (evidence) is probably long gone…
mintegra when I used synchromesh it was red. Not even close to looking like regular oil.
nawww i didn’t mean it offensively at all. i just meant like its a shame that he’s got suspicion that the mechanic used something else. i hate having untrustworthy people work on my car, i went through a few different shops before i finally found one i like and can trust now. they only do alignments and exhaust work for me but still.
thanks for helping me figure this out. I am 100% sure he didn’t give me the syncromesh. The car shifts 1000x better with the 10W30. I don’t know if it was a mistake or oversight or intentional… they seem pretty honest and don’t have a lot to gain by keeping 3 quarts of syncromesh and then losing a customer. but they should have known to at least put the correct weight oil in… it was much thicker than 10w30.
I will probably order more syncromesh down the road and do it myself!
only one then the rest 10 w30
I have always refilled the entire amount with syncromesh. I never mixed it with motor oil.
I filled my MT with a blend of Synchromesh and 10-30 motor oil. Seemed good for a couple years, but then recently noticed my rebuilt trans was wheezing like a smoker. Started grinding gears a bit too. Getting into Reverse (even at a stop after going to 1st/2nd) made me cringe. Drained the fluid and it looked like muddy water the kind catfish like. Anyways, don’t know if it had anything to do with that sketchy brake shop I took it to where they said they can’t bleed the brakes 'cause they don’t know how to work on them “fancy import racing cars”, or what but I just hope my MT is not on it’s way to an early grave.
Dropped 2.3 quarts of “Acura MTF” (same as Honda MTF) in the top trans hole and now she’s so shmooth like butter, no more grinds. The wheezing isn’t gone but much better. Also used a magnetic drain plug ftw
