Finally got the pistons installed. It’s been a long journey…
2 bent oil rings and 1 defective compression ring, but theyre finally in.
Also started cleaning the carbon out of the combustion chambers
Eww.
I’ll post pics after I hit it a few more times and get it all wiped down.
Can anybody confirm the placement of the breather box? I pulled it off of my old block and I’ve marked the picture for where I believe it goes. I ask because I know that the 96+ LS blocks didnt have the box and I got confused as to which block I have.
From what I can tell, the hose goes from the breather to the nozzle near the deck and the bottom fitting of the box fits perfectly in that vacant hole.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks- Craig
Got some a little bit of work done today.
Oil pump installed
Windage tray and oil pickup gasket installed
Oil pick up installed
Water neck and coolant pipe installed
ARP head studs installed
Played with the cylinder head for a minute.
Out with the destroyed oil pressure switch:
In with the new:
I was wanting to install the oil pan but I couldnt get all of the old gasket off. The guy I bought the short block from mustve used some crazy adhesive.
Oh, and I found this. Looks like a Primo owners manual cover. Neato.
Until next time…
Good build man… keep up the good work. BTW- Do you know where three points automotive is?

Thanks. I’ve never heard of that shop. My gf says it’s probably in Pflugerville.
Small update.
It’s been a while but I’ve been a little lazy and also ran into a small setback.
I broke a waterpump bolt in my block. Shitty. Had to take it back to the machine shop where they removed it and helicoiled it.
Started the oil line
Water pump, tensioner and timing belt pulley installed.
I’ll get some more work done today.
nice build, this is a great thread
good luck on the build

Thanks bro.
Last night I had some trouble with the 1/8 NPT plug. My tap was a little bit too long so it wouldnt make the hole big enough (it bottomed out before the largest end of the taper could tap the hole). I ended up having to go with a slightly larger tap but the plug went in pretty snug after that. The hex plug on the head had me worried but it came out with a little man-handling. The drivers side mount has been installed. The OEM head gasket was given a coating of copper spray and installed as well as the Full Race dowel pins. Pics will be up as soon as the batteries recharge.
nice, cant wait to see it when it is finished
As promised, a few pics of the engine as it stands right now. Excuse the mess.
should deffintly clean the head up to match the block.
^^
For sure. The head isnt torqued down. I was just mocking up the oil line and checking the dowel pins. Head will be blinging as well.
looks good. did you have any problems with anything yet. i just picked up a bare b18b block that im about to build and just wanted to know .

Besides being a complete n00b at engine building, everything has gone pretty smoothly. Except for breaking the water pump bolt, and having to extract the 1/8 NPT plug, its been cool. Just take your time and you should be alright. If it feels wrong, just STOP, then read up some more on whatever it is youre working on. Good luck brosama.
Got some more work done. Cleaned the head up a little and torqued it down.
My trusty 1/8 NPT tap that I forgot to take a pic of
A comparison pic of OEM vs the Full Race dowel pins…
The copper spray I used on the head gasket
Final resting place of the cylinder head
Another shot. Note my work stool AKA my daughter’s Elmo chair.

Thanks for the kind words. I’ve learned alot along the way so I’m hoping to share some of it. As for tuning, the plan is to go with a CROME basemap (P72 ECU) from phearable.net using the current setup. Then I’ll dial it in once I upgrade the cylinder head internals. Thanks again for checking in.
Installed the cams today. I wasnt as thorough with the pics today because I was trying to get shit done. It’d be easier to document if I had another person working with me, but I dont so…
Assembly lube
Cam journals all lubed up
Same with the cam caps
Cams and caps in
My replacement stud (it was broken when I bought the head)
Rails in
Cam cap bolts installed and torqued to spec
Cam gears installed
Cracked open the OEM box again to pull this out
Timing belt installed
Done for now.
Must…have…Shinerbock.
