Synsei's slow build. 56K ask for a raise.

looking good, great walkthrough build for those who want to learn…

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I’m actually learning as I go along because I’m really not that mechanically inclined. Haha. All it takes is research, time, balls and of course…a daily driver.

Well I’m waiting for my box of OEM goodies to come in, also my Full Race Vtec conversion kit and MFactory drain plug. In the meantime, I decided to hook my boy up since he needed a place to ship his JDM ITR clip (no engine). Here are some pics.

Well my garage looks like the place where Hondas go to die.

At least I finally got the block on the engine stand.

Shout out to my crew. Reppin’ the Dirty “D” fool!

And I snagged this from the ITR. Looks 1000% better now that it’s cleaned up and got all of the glass/ dirt off of it.

Kinda cool knowing I pulled this from an actual JDM ITR instead of buying a brand new one from somewhere. I dunno…I dig shit like that.

My box of OEM parts will be here tomorrow so I can finish putting the block together. My LSVTEC kit should arrive tomorrow as well. If I’m up to it, it might install the pistons tonight.

have fun with that front end conversion… i never got how that worked. do you just swap the firewall or cut the whole front end off and weld the new one on?

Nah. Only thing you use is the core support, hood, fenders, bumper, lights, and grill pieces. He just got a good deal on a motor-less front clip. We’ll be chopping up the rest with recip saws. LOL.

Well I wasnt feeling froggy enough to install the pistons last night so I didn’t. Lol. Anyways, in other news, my box of OEM stuff came in as well as my Full Race LSVTEC conversion kit. The kit was missing the dowel pins so I gave them a call. One of the engineers apologized and said he would personally send the dowels to me through Priority Mail. So I’ll wait for them.

The goods.

Big ups to my homegirl Kennica for coming through again with the parts. Congrats on the NSX!

I’ll try to build the complete bottom end this weekend.

Well I got a couple of toys in today. My girl got me a Shadow Stormtrooper and an Obi Wan Kenobi, and my MFactory magnetic drain plug came in. I also got some cable for my fuse box relocation that I botched up.

Aww…its kind of cute

Wait…this shit is GANGSTER!

I saw a picture of a guy holding up a rod/piston so I decided to try it out. I doubt any metallic debris will get past this sucker.

I’m on my way to go buy a piston ring expander so I can install my pistons.

The saga continues…

bad ass. i wish i had a 1/4 of the new parts your have.

your not the 40yd virgin are you? it seems you have quite the action figure collection. lol :nobody:

i love this thread man! nice work on the build so far…plus i love how its also updates of you life haha

Theyre not action figures. They dont have movable parts. Theyre sculptures.

:hugs:

Thanks brosama. I figured I’d throw some extra stuff in there since the build was moving kinda slow.

Anyways, Full Race sent the dowel pins that were M.I.A. They also threw in a couple more stickers…not that I have anywhere to stick them.

I installed the rings on the pistons. Ironing boards rule.

All the pistons with rings

I’ve got 2 pistons installed and the other 2 will have to wait until my 2 replacement oil rings come in. Thats right, the piston ring body count has now risen to 2. Good thing I foresaw this and bought 4 extras. Hahah.

I now have 3 of my pistons in after getting my replacement oil rings in. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that something was going on with the 2nd compression ring. I looked closer and that bitch was split (circumference-wise). So I called Hastings directly even though I got the rings from K-Teller and one of the engineers hopped on the phone. Dawn was agreed that this was a defect. She was VERY nice and got me all hooked up. So I should have the last piston installed next week. Damn. So much drama for some pistons.

some running around huh?? :hyper:

I know this is your build, but from my own personal experience I would not use the water pump, especially if it says “reman” anywhere on it. I had a “reman” water pump which I didn’t know because it was replaced, along with the timing belt, right before I bought the car . So, I buy the car in '02 and 50K miles later in '06 I hear a slight noise coming from the water pump area for a few days. I figure it was nothing and drive my car like normal. Well, took it to 6.5K rpms, stop at a light and I hear a nasty rattling. I pull into a parking lot and the engine in gushing out coolant. The engine stalls and I call a tow truck. Get the car towed and fixed.

The reason for the disaster was that the bearing seized in the water pump causing it to lock up. The frozen water pump immediately sheared the teeth off the timing belt, and caused the camshafts and valves to get out of synchronization. A couple of gear teeth on the water pump also ripped off when this happened. I’m lucky I didn’t have permanent engine damage. I don’t want you to lose out in a few years just because of a $50-100 part, especially after all your invested time and money.

If it ain’t a brand new OEM Honda water pump, than I wouldn’t even think about installing it and then I would replace it again when I did the timing belt in 90K miles.

^^^

Thanks. I’ve actually been re-thinking that part of my build recently. Good food for thought.

how do you know the clearances for the bearings? i see the plastigage pic but have no idea what i’m looking at. and did you order all the gaskets from honda seperate? that must have set you back a little or did you get some kind of discount through another party for the honda gaskets? if you could point me in the right direction for some reading material on the measurements issue that would rock. where in austin are you, cause i moved from cedar park about two years ago to here and go back often.

I used the oil clearance specs that are in the Helms manual. You basically put Plastigauge on whatever you need clearance specs on, torque it down to spec, unbolt everything and see how much the Plastigauge got crushed. Then you hold the package up to the crushed Plastigauge to give you the clearances. Then you wipe off all the Plastigauge and bolt everything up for real. Don’t worry…once you get the Plastigauge you’ll know what to do with it.

I got all my OEM parts from a friend of mine. Paid about $360 for all of it (very slight discount).

I downloaded a Helms manual online and I cross reference it with a Haynes manual I bought used from Amazon.

I live in North Austin. I’m originally from Cali but I stayed here after I got out of the Army.

Hope I this info was helpful to you.

Hey, no problem, anything not to have someone experience the unnecessary loss of $700 that I endured or a possible complete engine failure.

By the way, I helped my girlfriend and her mom pick out the same exact couch that you have on page one. Also, I’m not originally from Texas either and am also an Army vet. I was born and raised in Delaware, served my time at Ft. Myer, Virginia and came to TX when I got out. My dad moved down here while I was doing my four year contract and I wanted a change of scene and warmer weather. Now, I’ve used up the whole GI Bill on my education, and am going to graduate from A&M in less than a month. I realize that everybody out there loves the Longhorns, but I actually was one myself for a short semester before changing my major and school.

Anyway, sorry to get off track and good luck on the build.

do you have a link for the helms manual?

^

Sorry. Ive been in Florida this past week for work. I dont have a link to the manual. I think I came across it on Honda-Tech though. Shits HUGE. Like a 1600 page PDF file.

Just got back from Florida (for work) and saw that my new compression ring came in. I was wanting to put it all together this weekend but I’m not allowed on my house since my girlfriend is throwing a damn baby shower at our place. Girls FTMFL.
