Teg Tip: Bad Idle Troubleshooting

no problem, do you need a tissue , dont cry about it

my apoligies

Ben, great post! Very informative and this is one of the most complete writeup I’ve seen for troubleshooting the bad idle problem.

Just like to add one more culprit to your list of things to check. A long time ago after my B16A swap, the car idle around 2,000 rpm on start up and stay like that constantly. I’ve check almost everything and spent days trying to track down the problem. Somehow I ended up unscrewing the idle screw on the throttle body and sure enough the idle screw was shorter than the stock screw. I would recommend people who purchased a bored out throttle body to check their idle screw also.

I’m off again to hunt down this idle problem on my current motor.

Good thread!

Okay guys, got a new one for ya. Please bare with me. Okay, I was idling at 1500 when first started up, and from what I can remember it would go back to usual when it was warm but occasionally jump up to 1500 even though it was warm. I opened the FITV and screwed in the little white thing. That had me idling at about 1200 or 1100 when cold and 750 or 800 when warm. Now, I thought originally that 1500 was too high for an idle even when it’s cold outside but after reading (killing myself for doing this before researching enough) I found out that it’s supposed to idle around 1500 when it’s cold. My question is should I unscrew the FITV so that it’s back to normal or what? In other words, is screwing this thing in a form of adjustment or is it retightening a part that frequently loosens itself. I must stress the mantra, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

how much effect would not having a new tb gasket when replacing the throttle body cause?

I assume it would alter your idle pretty badly.

humm… ok, thanks…

time to go change it… or add some gasket maker at least…

I just completed this job tonight. PERFECT!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

I survived 6 degree weather all while doing it!

ouch…

what problems were u exactly having before? and how is it now?

Earlier this Spring it started the idle problem all the time (still and moving). then it stopped all Summer.

In October, it started back up. I cleaned the ICAV and is helped a little, but then it bounced only when the car was moving. adjusted the idle. Knothing.

Then I replaced the TPS, no luck.

Early December, it went away by itself!

Last week when it hit the lower single digits, it came back with a vengance. It was soooooo bad -and instanlty too! It was bouncing rapidly like every second up to 2500 RPMs! I psych’d myself to go out in the cold as weather (6 degrees) and check the FITV. Looser than the bolts on a Dodge! Screwed it down and viola!!! <sp?

The only unusal thing it it doesnt fast idle for a few seconds like normal on cold starts. Screwed it down to much? It almost goes straight to 800-900 RPM’s. I probraly should check the idle screw after the car warms up on a warmer day.

wow… ok… i’ve seriously gotta fix mine then…

would the FITV be the cupril if sometimes when i start up my car, it runs idle down, lower and lower, then boggs, then dies?
after it does that, i try to start it again, then doesnt work…
then wait a little bit, then it starts up and idles just fine again…

does it do it ONLY when cold? Then it could be the fitv. Otherwise look into the IACV or the igniter or something. Mine does what you are describing when warm but VERY seldom (like 2x a year).

My car did that for a day last year. Cold start. is she running now?

mine does that rarely…

like every once a month or sumthin…

ithink it does it when cold & warm… ima try the iacv…

This isn’t Brandon but one of his friends. My name is Scott. I would like to thank Ben for this write up. After a few months of my Jspec B16A idle problems in my EG6 this article helped us solve the problem. It was the FITV the whole time, even after I replaced the IACV and checked for leaks. My car would start up at around 2,5K and once warmed up would go up and down from about 2,000-3,500. It’s now fixed (Just put the new FITV in) and running perfect. Just have to replace the thermostat and figure out my cooling fan problem and everything will be perfect. Again thank you Ben GREAT write up!!!

ben

So u did put ur 94 IM on ur b18b? when i was putting my b18b in my car i actually had a 92 IM that i put on instead because i wasnt quite sure if i would be able to hook everything up…i remember seeing a couple sensors on the 94 IM that werent on my 92 or 91 IM…if u could plz tell me what u did i would be most appreciative, cause i would like to put it on for the extra air flow it brings apposed to the 92!
