I have a 1991 GS B18A1. My temp gauge usualy sits around the 1/4 mark. But earlier I was driving around and I look down at my temp gauge and the needle is slowly going up. So I pulled over and check to make sure their was coolant in the overflow container and the motor wasn’t hot. So I got back in and drove farther and the needle started climbing again it reached the 3/4 mark and was still moving before I could pull over and shut it off. After I shut it off I got back out and popped the hood yet again, the motor wasn’t hot, it was as warm as it usualy is. Then I got back in my car, started it, looked at the gauge and the needle was in the red. What the hell is going on here? :argh:
is there any way you could have gotten air in the system? have you done any work to the cooling system lately?
you can test the sending unit by measuring its resistance first cold, then hot. see if it falls within spec.
also, you can try using a temperature gun to read the engines actual temp and compare it with the gauge readings
I topped off the antifreeze awhile ago and bled it but no havnt did it recently. Only things ive done is put a new iacv, clean the fitv bled it after, new ngk plugs and wires and thats pretty much it. the oil pressure sensor went bad too but havnt had a chance to fix it yet. Also just drove the car earlier about 3 miles, the gauge’s needle was in the red, yet the motor was normal. no noises no smoke from the exhaust no nothing.
i’d check the engine temp with a thermal gun then. and make sure the system is completely bled. if there is air trapped at the sender it will read inaccurately
Have you checked the actual coolant level in the radiator? I had the same problem a few weeks back, overflow ok but guage still read hot. Popped the radiator cap and my radiator level was way low. I think the cap was sticking…anyways, filled up radiator and has been fine since.
I don’t mean to be rude and jack the thread but I do have a question from this train of thought… would you be able to bleed the system simply by running the motor and leaving the rad cap off and letting it escape out of the top of the rad? I’m a little bit leery of using the bleeder bolt to bleed the cooling system… :S
why? whats to worry about? maybe someone else can confirm this but Isn’t it the highest point in the cooling system(where air would collect)?
To the OP. have you checked to make sure your geting a good connection between the sensor and the connector on the harness. A loose conection would increase the resistance which would make the needel in the guage to rise.
