okay guys ive been having problems back to back. so today i went to change my thermostat did about half of it got the new one in and bolted up the housing after work. do to lack of space no torque wrench would fit in there so i just used a ratchet and the such. i go and fill up the radiator and turn my car on boom! its running. now about 3 or 4 minutes later im inside letting the cooling system bleed air out and next thing i know it sounds like my car is droning(yes droning like a high to low idle up and down) so i tell my brother to shut it off and i take a look in the radiator and theres not really anything in there. so he says let me try to start it up.
clickclickclickclick. no start. i say the radiators not full like it was when i first started it when it was idling fine. and wait i hear it a sound of something moving like a liquid. so i shine my flashlight underneath my car and theres my coolant. leaking from somwhere anove i went to the the tstat housing and i saw a line of antifreeze leaking not a lot but it was enough to leak and drain my radiator. atleast what you can see in there from the top. so now my thermostat housing is leaking and my car wont start. why did it just start jumping in idle then when i turned it off start leaking? its all ground and tight i double checked. it was leaking right underneath my thermostat housing also which i thought was tight( i tightened it to it was flush at the top and on the sides i couldnt see the underneath) and why would this cause my car to not start? did something blow?
i looked at similar situations and they all say the ground bolt is why its not starting and the thermostat seal is positioned wrong and thats why its leaking. let me know what you guys think i have to go buy more antifreeze in the morning. thanks guys
Take out the spark plugs and check for coolant in the cylinders. Only thing j can think of is blown head gasket. If you put the thermostat wrong the pressure had no where to go.
Someone have any other ideas.
alright ill check tomorrow but yeah im positive i put it in their the right way i looked at the way the old one was and it was in there correctly just stuck open. so what would be the wrong way? because i didnt put it in there backwards.
how i put it in there not my car but it was facing this way and it was leaking right where that wet spot underneath there is except it was more. so i guess ill check the plugs and if theres coolant i already know. if there isn’t what could it be then? the thermostat housing not being tightened correctly?
you just killed your engine. it’s dead
naa i’m just kidding. you disturbed an aluminum mating surface that hasn’t been touched in possibly the life of the car. it’s probably corroded. usually i buff the housing sealing surface with a light wire wheel. get it good and shiny. clean the sealing surface on the engine side with a scraper being very careful not to nick or gauge anything. dry both surfaces. then i use a THIN skim of sealant on both sides of the seal.
the fluctuating idle is due to air in the system. the iacv opens and closes because of it.
drain the coolant into a clean pan. clean and dry your mating surfaces, and reseal it.
is the clicking coming from inside the car? or from the starter?
i checked the plugs for coolant because people seem to get that in their cylinders when the headgasket goes bad and i checked the oil no milky mixture whatsoever. haha it was the starter for sure man. im gonna go out right now and get some antifreeze and some sealent is that grey high temp silicone okay? i dont have any honda bond and hopefully they let me buy it since im 17 lol. they think im gonna get high. but yeah ill clean her up and refill her and get that sealant in there and hopefully that just solves the issue. havent drove her for one day and i feel like dying haha i love my piece of crap haha. i also was doing this after work till about one am i got home at probably about midnight and it was not fun using a stupid flashlight and being all cold but will do man thanks for your help.
thanks welfare i actually have heat now haha
Man Jalenda, having some problems in general?
yeah man its been rough. having no heat throughout the winter my brothers car wasnt running so no rides in his car with heat, tires were bald just got new ones,no carpet, had strange vibrations, no exhaust and my cats probably clogged or broken i dont know its loud though i didnt have a headlight,my trunk didnt lock, axles were bad needs valves adjusted and its got mitch match interior from the back. but it runs with 132000 on the clock i think it was just poorly maintained by the po and the po before him. but hey what could i expect got it for 900 and have been learning things everyday about it. it needs work my friend
pick up a manual and read it cover to cover. all it takes is knowledge, a bit of common sense, and the right tools. the first two are free
yeah man i got a haynes and its not very insightful haha. but i learn from that, some common sense and watching you guys
