thinking about building an engine

Hey guys im in the process of trying to find what route I wanna go with the motor en of my DA, and I started thinking Id like to build my own motor. Now im no engine builder but Id really like to put one together. Im looking at trying to get around 200hp and similar torque. im not interested in turbo I want all motor power. Im just looking to see what im getting into and what route I should go in terms of internals. I dont need super expensive shit. So lemme pick your brains tell me what works and what I should avoid.

What kind of motor do you have ? I plan on doing the same thing to my b18a1 but I have read and heard it cost a Shit load so I will do basic bolt ons and then small turbo set up good luck with the build

got 200whp out of my b20 vtec, stock cams, skunk2 manifold, skunk2 pro TB, evo8 injectors, stock bore, eagle rods, and cp high compression pistons. ran it on e85 to be safe cuz of the compression ratio… was a blast to drive

I was thinking of going B20v, I have a b16 head in my garage. but im not sure if it the right route this early on. Im still learning and have a long way to go. I also live at altitude so I need to do more work to make the power. Turbo is real popular in Colorado for that reason but im no where near responsible enough to do a turbo set up yet. If i was preferable going to choose a displacement Id lean more towards a 2.0 but the B20s walls are thinner than a B18 and Id like to go with a more bullet proof setup. Im just tossing the idea for the future. im swapping in a B20 with a GSR trans and thatll be a nice little setup to rock until i build something cool

all motor + honda= no bueno. horsepower and tq goals are nowhere as near as relevant as what your plans for the car are. 200 whp is a very attainable goal, 200 tq will be tricky. if you can get your hands on a b18c1/5 block, that is where to start. my planned build this offseason is a b18c1 block, b16 head, pr3 pistons, itr or ctr intake and cams. i should see around 180whp out of it, but nowhere near that in tq. i shy away from b20 anything, the redline is super low, b20 vtec setups are notoriously unreliable, and i am personally not a fan of the cylinder wall design in the b20. my car currently has a b20z in it, if it survives this track season i will be very surprised. poor guy hates being in second during autox.

thats my concern with the B20 over a B18 block. They make about the same horse power but the B20 is just a little more torquey on the bottom end. it is very true the redline is crap at about 7200 if im correct, where as a b16 head will rev untill that LS crank will fall out. Im thinking about doing a vtec build but vtec will always be a little more than more money than no vtec. I wish I could get my hands on a C5 block but id be lucky to get a C1 block here in colorado, people are so stingy with there honda parts, So so far after reading through loads of forums if im going vtec ill have to stick with a B18 block if im lucky and find a nice gsr block then cool. nut if not ill just see about whipping up a nice B18 block with the P75 head since the pats following on its pretty good. Id use my A1 block and head but Mr. Number 4 bearing is no longer in place and is wreaking things up down there.

car-part.com or ebay to find a block if none can be found locally. the gsr bottom end is really great. oil squirters, girdle, and better rods in stock vs stock comparison. if you’re going to build, might as well be patient and wait until you can get what you really want.
