thinking about swapping my auto for a 5-speed, need some help please.

O.K. i’ve got a 1992 teg RS 1.8 B18a. My auto tranny is now starting to flare up a bit, by this i mean that it intermittantly slipps between 2nd - 3rd and from 3rd to 4th. Also i find that it is taking longer for it to shift out of 2nd. I’ve owned the car since sept 2001 and have had the fluid changed twice already, and constantly check the condition and level of my tranny fluid.

I’ve been approached by a buddy of mine who has a 1991 teg gs with a 1.8 B18a engine and 5-speed tranny that was rolled and offered me everything that i would need to convert my auto to a 5-speed for $600 compared to buying a used auto at a scrapyard for $1150 (best price). My question is: will the 5-speed from the 1991 gs fit my 1992 rs engine. Please help. I’ve read shenrie’s article on swaping a 90 5-speed into a 91. but im also wondering about the ecu’s will they match?

Also please consider that i live in St.johns Newfoundland and nobody here knows anyone who has done this with a teg before and the dealer isnt quiet sure if it will work either. Most every body here are concerned with domestic V8’s and only a few of us believe in our tegs. Any help would be very grateful

the tranny will work just fine. Just make sure you use the clutch that comes w/ the tranny. And in the future you will have to buy your clutches for the 90-91 tegs, and NOT the 92-93.

the ecu will NOT work. 90-91 is non obd and 92-93 is obd1 you don’t really need to know what that means, just that they aren’t compatible. So, you’ll want to pick up a 92-93 ecu, it should run you about $40-$70.

thanks

Thanks for the help i really appreciate it now i will pick up that 5-speed, definitly. Just to clarify, you said i need an ecu from a 92-93, was that for a 5-speed? Also, is there a lot of difference between the standard and auto dash gauges, can i use the auto gauge when i swap?
