Thump in front wheel

I searched all over for someone with this problem but I cant seem to find anything. I have a thumping in the front left wheel somewhere. I bangs hard enough I can feel it in the steeringwheel and floorboard. Ive take the wheel off a few times and looked around for anything loose or any bad bushings but everything looks fine. I can feel the thump more when I hit a dip but sometimes it thumps while im driving on smooth road. Its kindof random. I have replaced the axles since this problem started with new ones so I can rule out axles, bushings, and brakes. Any Ideas?

lump

you probably have a lump in ur tire. it happened to me but i had a bad axle and lumpy tire.

HTH

How would I be able to make sure? Should I swap that wheel to the other side or something? These are brank new tires I just got 2 weeks ago but Im pretty sure it was happening before I got these new tires. They are Nitto 195/55 on Si rims.

swap out the tires w/the back 1’s…either that or look for a bald spot, bubbles in the tire, ish like that…is ur wheel alignment bad?

i’ll be @ autolinks in 1hr…u should roll by seeing as how ur in pasadena… im across the street from moose’s right now!

But I dont really think its the tire because these are brand new and its not always thumping. Just once in a while. Its not like it thumps everytime the wheel turns. It just thumps like something is loose in the wheel well but I cant seem to find anything loose. I dont think its realted to the tires, but I’ll check them just incase.

maybe the wheel is out of balance, like a “balancing weight”(I don’t know what they’re really called) fell off or something

na that weight is still on there. Again, its not like a tumping every time the wheel turns but rather a clanking of something loose in the suspension or steering rack.

hmm…

Its not the tires becuz im having the same problem on the same side and ive changed my tie rods and rotated the tires… I even went from 14’s to 17’s to see if it made a difference but i still hear that thump… I hear it might be the inner tie rod or the racka-pinnion (howeva you spell it), but i still have yet to find out

maybe its our lower ball joints. Thats the only thing I can think of but I dont know how to tell if its bad or how to fix it.

Maybe you ran over an old lady and she is getting dragged along under the car, but every once in a while she gathers her energy and thumps on the oilpan in a desperate attempt to get your attention.

But seriously, I have this problem too. I went as far as having hubs replaced and had no luck. If you ever figure it out I’d like to know what causes it.

check your CV boot for any cracks, holes, or slices. if there are any, chances are the grease leacked out and the bearings are causing the noise. i had a thump whenever i would turn. i replaced one axle and changed the CV boot on the other axle, the axle i replaced came with new boots. the noise went away. take your tire off and check out the underside of the car. see if you see a streak of grease in a straight line directly about the boot, this is if you don’t feel any cracks or holes or slices. hope this helps. update us on your findings or anything.

yeah i used to have that problem too but thats not it. I have had 2 axles on that side since the problem started.

Hmm I had a big thump like the whole wheel moved back and forth on the passenger side when I went down driveways that had a small drop off.

Try checking to see if the radius rod/arm is tight? and check the bushings for the radius rod/arm, it’s worth a try, but somewhat of a pain to get at and remove, well for me it was anyways.

Radius arm is fine. I can hear the thump if i push down on the car while its parked. I still dont have a clue what the problem could be. I thought maybe the sway bar? but it seems tight in there. I think the reason i cant find the problem is when i jack the car up, whatever was loose becomes tight enough that i cant find it.

bad balljoints?

I figured it out! It was just the bolts on the top of the struts were not screwed down enough. I guess I torued them before I put the assemblies in so pillow mounts got pushed down further from the weight of the car. I just tightened the bolts on both shocks and the thump is gone!!!
