timing belt is slipping toward the motor

I just replaced my short block this weekend. Picked up a used b18b1 cheap as the old b18a1 spun a bearing. Got everything in the car torqued down to spec, plugged everything up and she fired right up…

BUT…

the timing belt is slipping toward the motor. Meaning when you install the timing belt, it is centered on the Crank Shaft, Tensioner, Water Pump then the Cam Gears. As soon as you start the car, the belt slides inward toward the motor.

Tensioner & Water pump is new, there is no rubbing, the belt in the perfect tension, and it runs fine but it’s just not right. We were able to loosen the tensioner just a tad, and slide the belt back where it should be on all the gears with a long screwdriver for the crank gear, started it up and it slid again!

After all the work we did this weekend, the last did I want to do is the timing belt again…

Any ideas…Ill get a cell phone pic in a few

Steve

Do you have those big washer deal that go on the crank first before the belt does?

yep…thats the 1st thing that I thought of! Either way though, thats between the crankshaft gear and the pulley, it should not effect belt position…at least i don’t think so?

on mine, there was also an inner belt guide between the block and the crankshaft gear, as well as one between the gear and the pully. (one on bothe sides of the crankshaft gear

also, the guides have a curve to them. they should be like this )H( with the H being the crank gear.

hmmmm, I didnt even check to see of there was one on this block and I sold my other one. Ima see if I have an extra one in the garage and if I do, I’ll check it out.

Looks like i’m doing a timing job!
