Timing help

so i cant udjust my timing and took it to a shop and was told i couldnt be adjusted because of either my pully was bad or my belt jumped…any help???

Well, if the timing belt has indeed skipped a tooth (or teeth), then yes, that would screw up the mechanical timing of the valves. It has to be removed and put back on properly before adjusting the ignition timing.

Does the car seem to run okay? From personal experience I know that these motors will run extremely poorly if the timing belt is off by even 1 tooth.

What did he mean by “bad pulley”? The crankshaft pulley has timing marks on it that are used to adjust the ignition timing with a strobe light. Did he mean the marks are damaged or something?

yes the car boggs till about 4-5rpm then it catches on…but they pully seems fine i can see all the marks

most definitely check the timing belt and make sure every thing is lined up correctly etc cam gears and crank pulley all at tdc on number 1 cylinder.

that shop sucks, either way you can time it.

thanks ill check the belt…do i need to take off my valvecover to see the belt or can i just remove the timing cover??

just the valve cover. Do you know how to rotate the engine by hand? This will involve putting a 32mm socket on the crankshaft bolt. Rotate engine slowly counterclockwise. The dots on the camshaft gears should line up when #1 piston and crankshaft is at top dead center.

with the belt on or off??

with the belt on.

so i took the valve cover off and check everything out…one cam is slight off the right…i believe its ths intake cam…so one is TDC and the other is more at the 1oclock…does this mean it jumped a tooth? when the belts off it can be adjusted correct?? and i didnt know what bolt was 32mm??? my crankbolt is 19mm…i turned it tll the cam was at TDC but like i said before on was off…i have a haynes manuel and plan to do this myself just need some input on whats going on…lol

Yes your mechanical timing is most likely off. The two lines on the cam pulleys should be facing each other at TDC.

ok…now when the belt is off will i be able to manually adjust the cam pulley? and how?

You need to loosen the timing belt tensioner before you can adjust the belt.

I think you meant to say 19mm bolt!!!

yea i know this…but how to adjust the cam??

Physically turn the cam that needs adjustment to line up the timing marks.

No offense, but you don’t seem mechanically inclined. I would suggest getting a friend who is familiar with cars to help you.

i am mechanically inclined just not with timing etc…ive swaped trannys…motors…suspensions…pistons…just never really messed with timing or cams…i gotta learn somehow

Get and read the manual!!!

Use 6mm drifts/drill bits/bolts in the appropriate holes in the number 1 cam caps to retain the cams in the proper position.

You are halfway there.

Now use a wrench and turn the intake cam slightly clockwise and the exhaust cam slightly counter-clockwise to line up the timing mark on each sprocket with the line on the timing cover.

When they are both lined up, you can stick a 5mm punch through the top of each cam to hold them in place.

Next, make sure your crankshaft gear timing mark is lined up with the timing mark on the oil pump cover.

You should get a Helm’s manual. Rumor has it that they can be found for free on the internet.

thanks for the help peeps i got it done the other day! runs great and pulls like it should
