Timing off?

Hey guys I would really appreciate it if you could help me with this problem. I recently replaced the disributor on my '91 teg and went to have the timing set. I told the technician that I wanted it at 18 degrees. The problem is he said that the highest he could set it was 13 degrees. He asked me if my car was runnig ok and I told him it was. He said it shouldn’t be a problem and told me it was OK. Does anybody have any idea as to why this is happening?

I had a very similar problem. My distributor seized up so I had to replace it also. Ever since I did that the car ran like sh|t. After much, and I mean much, work to correct this I finnaly took it to a mechanic to see exactly where the timing was. It was off 22 deg!!! I’m guessing the reason this happened is because as the shaft of the distributor got harder and harder to turn it slowly stretched the timing belt and made it that far off. When I took the belt out it actually was a little longer than the new one which backs up my theory. This is how I fixed it… I figured as long as I went through all the trouble to get the timing belt out I might as well go ls/vtec. Worked like a charm baby! Now this is what I’m doing to V6 mustangs and all the other local chodes —>:burnout:

By the way, any mechanic that told you running at 13 deg. was okay is a tard. It says right on your goddamn hood that safe specs are 14-18 deg. prefered @ 15.

Thank you very much for your help. I’ll check that out and see how it goes. I’m also planning to go ls/vtec. I already have a b16a head, intake manifold and throttle body, solenoid and gaskets. I’m planning on rebuilding my whole motor, though. Thank you very much for the info.

No problem. If you’re not willing to fork out the roughly $1,100 it’s gonna cost to get the ls/vtec in and working right, go for the $50 timing belt and do it yourself(assuming you know how). Well good luck to you and its nice to know another ls/vtec is on its way in to a G2.

I’ll do the ls/vtec but not just yet. I’m not ready to have my car out of service for ome time. I’ll do the timing belt and just wait to do the ls/vtec right. By the way, how did you prep your motor (bottom end) and how does it feel so far.

I used JE Pistons and Eagle rods. Since I’m outta money for now I’m still running the A1 tranny until it fries. But, all in all, the engine is AWESOME. So much more power, and it feels so good to bring it up to 8k every now and then. I wouldn’t worry about having your car out of commission. It only took me about 6 hours to take the old head off and have the new one in and driving. And that’s pretty slow. It was my frist head swap, and I ran in to a few problems (radiator inlet broke, few fuel leaks) which added to the overall time. IF you don’t want to do it, and you take it to someone who’s done it before, they could probably have it in and working in less than 4 hours. Anyway, it was a GREAT investment for the power and options it opens up, not to mention I now have VTEC. Good luck with the belt and hopefully soon the swap.

Thanks for looking out. I really appreciate your help and advice. I’ll keep you posted on the head swap.
