timming belt loose

OK i have a 92’ ls and I put a 91 head on it. I put everything back together and i tightn the timming belt, Now its tight but while im hand turnnin the crank there is slack between the cam gears. WTF! please help

After you put the belt on, put a pipe wrench on the intake cam and turn it towards the firewall then make the belt tight

or you can bend a hanger and pull up on the tensioner pulley spring, that’s what I did…worked like a charm.

can i do that without taking off the timming belt cover?

I won’t say definetly, because I had the cover off, but I think I remember G2Guru telling me he did that with the cover on. Can you see the spring with a flash light? Its up and to the left of the pulley if I remember correctly. Let me know how it goes.

Jeff

have ur motor at No.1 TDC.
Loosen the tensioner bolt.

Turn the crank 3 teeth, and tighten the tensioner.

turn the crank? or the cam? wont that mess up my timming?

I have the same problem!! 91 head on 92 block… belt is super loose. its tight in 2 places, but loose in one.
