tint removal (banner)

what do i need to take the tint on my windshield off…
how do i…steps/tips…TIA

it is relatively easy… all you have to do is go to a store like Walmart and buy a pack of razor blades. they usually come in packs of 10 but they are around $2 so its not that bad (I dunno if they sell them individually, but you may try. if so, buy only one.)… Then, just place the razor blade parallel to the window and scrape it under the tint. If you go at it perpindicular (sp?), you will scratch the crap out of your windshield and it would suck  You can use a mix of Joy (dishwashing detergent) and water to get rid of the glue under the tint. If the tint is really old, it will flake off… if it flakes, you might be able to pull off strands of it. It will take you prob no more than 30-45 mins.
I had to strip off my tint from my hatch window cause it was the purple kind and the owner sprayed it with Windex (which contains ammonia - a bad thing for tinted windows) and started bubbling. I ended up stripping off everything on the back window, including the rear defroster… That was a freekin 4.5 hour job cause it was caked on (two tint jobs, one on top of the other…) Good luck. If you need additional help, im me on AIM at: sambostiffy… or email me

A pure ammonia solution in a spay bottle also works great to help release the tint film from the glass.

thanks guys…that really helped…

I got a pamphlet from TAP plastics on window tint and it gave a helpful section on removing tint.

Quoting straight from pamphlet.

Window Film Removal

Prepare a solution of:

  • 1 pint Isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol)
  • 1 pint warm water
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent

Spray solution liberally over entire film surface. Immediately cover the area with a single layer of newspaper. Then spray the newspaper with more solution to ensure the wetness of the entire area. Continue to spray the newspaper and keep it damp for 30-45 minutes. Now take off the newspaper and remove the film. (if it delaminates, then the adhesive bond on the glass is stronger than the film lamination bond.)

Continue with the film removal, even if it delaminates. If delaminated film remains, repeat wetting the window with sprayed solution and newspaper. After soaking again with solution, the remaining film layer should easily peel or scrap from the window.

Note: the longer the film is kept damp with solution, the easier it will be to remove.

I doubt its possible to scrath ur window with a razor blade the metal in the blade is actually softer then the glass thats why u need a diamond to realy scratch glass.

oh, ok. I have heard if you go straight at it, it will scratch. I stand corrected. Thx RevVaTeg…
