Tip for changing axles

Here’s a little trick I learned a while back from a Honda technician when separating the ball joint from the knuckle without a puller while changing axles:

After removing the 32 mm axle nut (with a bomb ass Impact gun @ 100-110psi [YIKES!]) then the cotter pin and castle nut, the next obstacle is breaking the ball joint loose from the lower arm which is where the above tip comes in handy.

In past experiences and from talking to others it seems that the puller is too much of a hassle. Some people even rip the ball joint boots.

I used this technique last weekend when changing SOL1D’s axle and broke it loose in about 4-5 good hits (not counting the time I smacked my hand :()

If we (Nic_17, kb8thekid, Archon, SOL1D and I) weren’t busy messing around the whole day we probablly could have finished the job within an hour’s time.

I always pop out the top one. :shy:

would it be a good idea to replace my axle with a 400hp one, eventhough my integra is almost completely stock?

My guess is it’ll come in handy when you get 400hp. :hmm:

If you ahve the money, and they dont’ requite pressing in a custom Hub etc. then go for it as you won’t ever have to replace them again.lol.

that is, place the fork in between the lower arm and knuckle and drive in correct? basically wedging the fork into place (between arm and knuckle) which prys the knucle out of the arm seperating the balljoint? is that right?
