Tire Size

doooood sweeeettt

Speedaddy: So your sayin’ a 205/50/15 is both wider AND taller than a 195/50/15? I was under the impression that it was just wider. Well, whatever.
I guess the numerous techs @ the tire shops & all the magazine info is wrong.
:getsome: :manual:

h93da6- your statement is incorrect. a 205/50/15 tire is wider and taller than a 195/50/15.

Umm between those two sizes… the only difference is the width of 195 and 205… the rest is the same. One is not taller than the other… well unless I’m high at the moment. :giggle:

Thanks hybrid90, that’s what I thought. I may have mis used a few words in my initial post, but I’m sure that 205s aren’t taller than a 195. you said it yourself Speeddaddy, “section width.”
Not to mention, doesn’t aspect ratio mean the ratio of it’s HEIGHT to it’s width? In other words, the lower the numer, the shorter the sidewall.

I’ll finish all this by giving a reference to my information:
Super Street 2005 Buyers Guide
pg. 128 titled: “How To Read A Sidewall”

Anyone else have a viable source for their info, or just more heresay?

The “50” is in reference to tire aspect ratio, as you stated. This ratio, is the percentage of sidewall height to tire width.

height of sidewall

width of tire

Therefore, if you keep the aspect ratio the same but increase the width of the tire, the height must also increase.

Here’s an example. A 50 series tire is a tire whose sidewall is 50% of its width. This is INDEPENDENT OF WIDTH, hence the reason it is a unitless ratio and not an absolute measure of sidewall height. No matter how wide a given tire is, if it is a 50 series tire its sidewall will be 50% of its width. So, for a 195/50 tire, the sidewall is 50% of the width, or 97.5mm. For a 205/50, the sidewall is again 50% of the width, or 102.5mm… 5mm TALLER.

I guess hybrid90 is high after all.

K according to digital’s post… maybe I’m wrong and I should lay off the drugs for awhile…

Thanks for setting me straight… you find out new shit everyday

DigitalHorizon: Yeah, when you break it down that way, it does make sense. That info was omitted from the above article. Not as clear cut anyway.

Speeddaddy: I do understand that many techs & some mag. info is incorrect or misleading, but when the same point is made multiple times by many different parties, it is generally believed to be true.
Also, please don’t think that as a personal attack. I was just sayin’ that I had a good, referenceable, (is that a word?) source for the info I was presenting. I’m sure that you do have alot of tire knowledge, I’m sure many people on here do, but no one had given a source; so I did.

Great discussion, let’s keep it up. :getsome: :manual:
