So I have a dilemma- my hood & roof are peeling & fading pretty bad. I can either leave it as is until I paint NEXT year, or sand & primer them black now to hide the fade & tide me over. I think it may leave the DA lookin’ kinda racy/ ricey, but the hood is pretty fugly. Here’s a few pics:
I was also going to do the trunk & in the process shave the emblems & add the wing I’ve been holding onto for over 2yrs. (thanks Steve!) Plus I am plugging the antenna & may put a VW Golf antenna on the roof.
SO WHERE TO GO WITH THIS???
I want to do this next weekend before the Orlando Meet; if at all. So do I leave it, paint it all (hood, roof, trunk) or just the hood etc. Any help is appreciated.
BTW- Maaco is out the question. I have a too much on my plate to hit the booth. It’s DIY or nothing.
painting it black will make the car look weird… i’d at least get the bad parts painted the proper color… otherwise, if you can drive happily with the paint peeling like that, then wait till next year
I honestly think that spraying it flat black/primer would look better than fading/peeling. It would be smooth and all the same color, and if you take your time, it wil come out looking alright. I have seen a few decent looking flat black tegs. Just my opinion, but I say GO FOR IT!!!
i think it all depends on whether u wanna take the time this year to do the work. sanding and prepping it to rattle can it does take some time, even with a good da sander and an inline sander. can be knocked out in a few days for prepping and for letting the primer cure n stuff, that will be a few hours.
maybe u can find some rattle can blue that is close to the color u got on there now? cuz if thats possible… u can hit all that urself for not very much $$$. all you’d have to do is invest in time and labor. maybe even get another hood that u can repaint to somewhat match ur color, which will save u some downtime. so that the only big downtime u’ll have is when u do the roof and the hatch.
Just to clarify, I’d only be doing the hood, roof, & trunk- Not the whole car.
I’m leaning toward just the hood getting painted. As I said, there is no way I can get the faded parts painted properly, ( at a shop) as the $$ for that project is non-existent. Downtime isn’t really a factor, as much as $$$
One option that i have used a few times to paint body parts is that i went to the paint store and they would mix the stock color and put it in a spray can. Maybe you should look into that. Even if its a little off i think it will look better than black. It does take a few long hours to prep like Squeezethis said. Good luck and dont cut corners with body work because you will kick yourself in the ass in the end.
yea some places can put it in can. is an option. but if u do that it would be a good idea to invest in rattle can clear coat too. will be a bit pricey, but is an option.
True and i paid about 10 dollars a can and about 7 for the clear. He would probably need about 2-3 cans of paint and about 3-4 cans of clear depending on how he wants it to shine. I heard the roof can be a bit hard to paint but i have never done it myself.
its a bit harder to do the roof cuz of those lines. i think the thing that makes it difficult is the location and angle u’re in to paint it. u gotta have a decent step stool, and even then, u gotta be able to reach over and steadily spray it on. most of us have lowered tegs, which makes it a bit easier, but it all depends. i’ve personally experimented with some floor jacks and some jack stands, and i tilted a car pretty far over in a paint booth. that made it a lot easier to paint… only had to paint from one side so no going back n forth. just an idea. if u’re gonna rattle can it tho, do try to do it in a booth or a “homemade” booth or something. good rattle can paint and clear isn’t free, so u wouldn’t wanna go ruining ur paint job by letting debris or dust or whatever get onto it while its wet.
painting it black wont look at all worse than what u got now… its not to bad if u do go ahead n spray it black cause itll just look like a work in progress thats all… i got my hood and both fenders black and my DA is charcol lol
Ahhh shitty that the peeling isn’t just on the roof… I left that top piece that you’ve got peeling on the roof body colour when I two-toned my car…
You can run a line from the bottom of the C pillar, where the rear hatch and rear quarter would meet if there wasn’t metal there - and that’d look alright.
I dunno, it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I like it - just to give you an idea of what the roof/hood/hatch look like black with a diff colour for the rest of stuff…
And dude - just rattle can it… Sand it, smooth it out, and rattle can a few coats… If you’re repainting it /anyways/ why pour more than 100 bucks into it now when you can do it in a few hours and it’ll cost you under 50…
As much as maaco sucks, it would look 10000 times better then painting the top half of your car with black primer. Do you really want your car to look like trash?
you have 3 options 1. save up and do it right 2.do it by yourself and just buy the paint and clear and save some money like me 3. or rat rod that shit XD
I don’t know what you have in your area, but a technical college could help. Some of them have paint classes where all you need to do is buy the paint and they’ll paint it for you free. They usually don’t paint the whole car. My just paint parts.
codeblack-that actually looks pretty good! I liked the way you did it on the roof, and flat black goes with that sorta brown, I’m not sure how well it would go with blue.
I’m saying rattle can it the same colour as best you can. Get a book about painting…they can give you all kinds of tips on blending and such. Have the paint code to your car? Be an almost perfect match with some tricks like wetsanding and blending. Remember prep is the most important part…don’t want rot on your roof.
