I got a good deal on a complete set of tokico illuminas today and i was curious if anybody else has run a set of these and, if so, what do you think of these? I also scooped up a skunk2 pro series front camber kit, so I’m thinking for the price it’ll be a decent start.
Everyone will say you should have got Koni’s but I live by the Illuminas. Im on my second set (different car, not due to failure). Previous car has OTS Ground Control coil sleeves. Current car had them with H&R Race springs (450f/375r) and now I have Skunk2 sleeves (10kF/8kR or 550f/450r I think) Overall I love them. I think the Skunk2 sleeves feel a little better than the H&R’s as far as driving quality as they dont seem as harsh. Maybe the dampening just fits these spring rates better. But on the track they are solid on full stiff, but that also depends on what spring rates you shoose
Either way, I love them. Very easily adjustable and much fun for the track and decently comfortable on the street. If you got a good deal on them, Id definitely keep them
I’ve had them on my GSR since 1993. I got 200,000 miles out of the first set. I’m on my second set now with about 70,000 on them. They have been great. Leave them on soft for the street them switch them over to rock hard for the track. Using the warranty after 17 years or so was great.
They have GC coil sleeves and i paid $85 for them, a front bumper and the skunk2 camber kit. Id say i got a good deal lol. I’ve done the fronts so far and took them out for a quick. On 3 they feel awesome on the street. I switched to 5 and the turn in is quick and sharp. Def a little rough for daily, but still surprisingly planted and not too bouncy like some others.
update. the gc springs were shot so I switched them with some tanabe df210’s i had. The fronts got finished last night, but due to a jack committing suicide, i never got to the rears. Those will be done tomorrow. I also believe im going to raise the front about an inch do it doesnt scrape so bad. The number 4 setting i think is pretty nice for daily around my area and 3 for highway.
heres how it sat on stock fronts with the ricer bumper.
the skunk2 camber kit and illuminas after i took the old GC’s off
I installed the rears this morning. My initial opinion after a short drive was indifferent. Something had to be wrong. I jacked the front end up and raised my ride height by .5" up front and set my rear illuminas to the 5th setting and there was a whole new feel. The fronts felt almost stock cruising, slightly bumpy over bad pavement, but well planted with little body roll through turns. The rear had quite a bit less roll and felt like it wanted to step out at times but never did. I’m sure with a nice flick and same e braking its very possible. All in all i am very pleased with this setup for my dd. May be a little soft for regular track use but not bad for the occasional track/backroad sprints and comfortable daily.
Putting the rears on 5 will help a with oversteer if the fronts are lower. Also with a bigger rear sway bar you will see more oversteer and alot of lift-throttle oversteer. The 24mm I installed was a night and day different, probably one of the best mods ive done to my suspension. Anyway, glad you like it!
