toolbox?

now that i’m having problems with my car, i have all sorts of fun questions… :stuck_out_tongue:

do any of you keep a toolbox in your car, or keep one handy for working on your car?

if so - what’s in it? i’m looking to put together a box that i can use to work on some of the easy stuff, and diagnose problems on my teg, but i don’t really know where to start…

I have a full set at home and here is what I carry:

10, 12, 14, 17mm regular 12 point sockets, 3/8" drive
10, 12, 14, 17mm deep sockets, 3/8" drive
Sparkplug socket, 3/8" drive
3/8" rachet
3 and 6" 3/8" extension bars
19mm deep 6-point “Impact” socket, 1/2" drive
1/2" breaker bar
8, 10, 12, 14, 17mm 12 point combination wrenches
4mm allen wrench
Multi insert screw driver
Leatherman tool (best needle nose pliers + wire strippers)
Flashlight

This covers just about any roadside emergency on a Honda car. Honda’s made it pretty easy for us by using these size nuts and bolts on their cars so it keeps the tool requirements pretty simple.

I keep a small tool box in the car as well as axle stands and a jack. I’d rather add a little bit of weight and keep peace of mind that I can tackle most problems should they arise.

As for tools… a VERY long phillips driver (handy under the hood, for headlight adjustments and for interior panel screws, etc). I also keep a metric 1/2 and 3/4 drive set alongside a torque wrench. I keep some ratcheting cresents and an offset screwdriver with all the bits I could ever need. I think I have some vice grips and some small wire cutters as well as some 16AWG wire and some ties. I also keep (don’t laugh)… a full distributor with coil and ignitor in the car alongside a backup set of upper and lower rad hoses. I have some clear pvc and some air compressor 1/4" OD hose for any emergencies. Ummm… a small DC compressor, tach, dmm… Oh yeah… an extra set of spark plugs and a rotor WITH that damn screw. I also have a few jumper wires with aligator clips and some paperclips for testing sensors, etc… As for fluids… I try to keep a small bottle of Mobil1 on board… The funny thing is, I also keep an ‘emergency kit’ in a small briefcase with jumper cables, a fire blanket, candles, gloves, flares and a first aid kit. I also keep far too many detailing products about… ummm… oh yeah… tire plugs and valve cores as well as some decent quality electrical tape and a small butane torch with rosin core solder…

If you have never broken down in a vehicle before, you will think that my list is a little excessive (although I forgot easily 10+ items that I carry)… If, however, you have had a no-start, boil over, etc… you will appreciate the detail pf the emergency kits…

At times I feel like I am living out of that damn car… I should take some of this shyte inside…

That about covers it… Don’t even get me started on what I keep out of the car for emergencies and maintenance…

I’d stick with the basic hand tools and carry a AAA card…

i too carry a tool box inside my car. heres whats in it

-rachet with 8,10,12,14,17 mm sockets
-8,10,12,14,17mm monkey wrenches
-phillips and flathead screwdrivers
-pliers, needle nose pliers
-crimper and wire cutter
-various electrical connectors (butt connector, bullet…etc.)
-electrical tape
-panel remover tool
-computer test light
-speaker tester
-a set of allen wrenches
-tire pressure gauge
-flashlight
-other stuff too, just can’t think of it right now

I used to carry a decent size set of short and deep 3/8" sockets. It was stolen along with my head unit, amp, and a torque wrench. I now carry an air compressor, AAA card, and a cell phone.

i carry a 144 piece craftsman in my teg :stuck_out_tongue: lol never can know when u need them for yourself or your at a friends house u know?

I dont keep any tools in my car.I asked a freind who was always building up Hondas and Acuras why they dont come with a light under the hood.(this was before I got my Integra). And his reply was,If a Honda breaks down, you dont need a light, you need a tow truck!!!

This is true for most stock Honda’s but as soon as you start modifying them, more things can go wrong. Intercooler pipes poping off, header bolts loosening, etc.

I agree with Mike King. I no longer bother carrying any tools (after some punk broke into my car and stole them) because I keep my car in a good state of repair and I just think that anything that would cause a breakdown would probably be too complicated or involved to fix by the side of the road. (Except, of course, for a flat tire).

Did you guys forget these cars are at least 9 years old or older?
