I’m having weird stuff going on lately that I’m going to capture here with a progress report.
EGR valve: Code 14 check engine light is lit. (Unable to troubleshoot comprehensively - details in another thread)
Cooling fans. The AC fan runs instead of the radiation fan. It is wired to come on with the key turned to ON. The fan stopped turning on a few months ago and the issue was corroded wires. Replaced, and the fan (still incorrect) ran as “normal”. As of about 3 weeks ago, the fan no longer comes on with they key set to ON.
Wipers: When key is ON, works normally at all speeds. When Engine On, wipers run at LOW speed, regardless of switch being set to OFF, INT, LO. When set to HI, wiper increase to HI speed. I reset the ECU and disconnected the battery, and the wipers return to normal operation.
Gremlins are becoming aggressive. The reason why I tried reseating the battery terminal was because many years ago, I had some weird actions occurring with the seat belt. Unsure what to do, I popped the hood and discovered a ton of corrosion on the positive terminal. Interestingly, as soon as I cleaned that off and reconnected it, the seatbelt issue was fixed.
I’m thinking perhaps there’s something going on with the ECU but I have not tried using the replacement one yet.
Driving home after work yesterday, the wiper problem returned. It was NOT a problem driving into work in the morning.
I decided to let it run to see whether it would do different things on the drive home. Sometimes if I hit a bump, it would pause. After about 10 minutes, I noticed that the INT would work. However, going back to OFF to make it run at LO. HI was consistent as the fastest. Once, it actually stopped at OFF for maybe 15 seconds, but then returned to LO.
I’ll have to check the HELMS for sure to see what circuit might be awry.
Assuming the windshield wiper wiring is nearly identical to an EF Civic, I would verify that the windshield wiper switch is working correctly. There are actually 4 switches in the wiper switch. FYI the wire diagram for that switch in my Genuine Honda1990 Civic service manual is wrong so you can’t always trust the documentation
I came to the same conclusion this morning. I looked at the Helms and saw the wiring diagram and then tried to find to find an aftermarket switch, but it doesn’t exist (the wiper switch is available new though).
What’s making me think it’s NOT the switch itself, and it’s a wire, is the fact that it works fine when ON, but weird when the engine is running. Perhaps a wonky ground (which might also fall in line with why a bump made it stop).
