Tranny grinding after 4,000rpms only in 3rd gear

WTF?? well, i know for a fact that I really need a new clutch. but I would like to know if it’s the clutch causing the grinding noise or if it is something else?

If I’m not racing or anything,… the tranny works/sounds nice,… but if i’m in 2nd gear and i pass 4,000rpm, turning into 3rd makes a grinding noise  ,… if i shift from 2nd to 3rd in 3,900rpms then the tranny doesn’t make any noise.

Ok, so what if it’s the tranny?? would you guys recomend a tranny from a GSR on my 92’ RS??? I’m planing on going turbo soon just to let you guys know.

Oh and what clutch is good enough? Stage 2? 3? 4? 5? I will be running around 7-10 psi.
Do you guys know any good clutch sites with good and cheap clutch sets???

Thanks in advance.

Well, that grinding that you are hearing is a shot synchro. You will have to open up the tranny and tear apart the insides to fix that problem. To make things even worse for you, the only way to get that synchro is to buy the 3rd gear set from acura. That costs just under $300, but is well worth it. It consists of the 3rd gear, 2nd-3rd synchro and 3rd-4th synchro.
I replaced that on my tranny and it has ran much better ever since.

Also, considering the fact that it is grinding at such a low rpm now, you are going to need to do that soon because you wont be able to shift from 2nd to 3rd for much longer if you continue to drive it hard.

Dont get a GSR tranny for your car if you are going to be going turbo. You will need the longer gears of the LS tranny for a turbo application.

The only other real option you have is to get another tranny, but then you wont know how long that one has before it is toast.

As far as the clutch goes, go to the forced induction help forum and ask the guys there what clutch would work best for your application. I am guessing that you will hear a lot of ACT 6 puck answers though…

most likely its your 3rd gear synchro. I have the same problem in my tranny. The fact that it only grinds above 4k means that the synchro isn’t completely worn out, but getting there.

if you shift above 4k double clutch and it shouldn’t grind.

when you pull the tranny to replace the clutch you can pull the tranny apart and check to see if it really is the synchro that is bad… most likely it is.
