I have the tranny up, at height … any hints on getting the mainshaft to slip into the motor? Can’t get the splines to line up. TIA.
up
make sure your clutch fits first,
don’t try to force it in, all your going to do is burr up all the splines.
USE your alingment tool.
make sure your pilot bearing is ok.
make sure that everything is clean.
I don’t know how strong you are , but try to pick the tranny up off the jack and try to slide it in.
if you don’t take your time, your going to be sorry.
i had a similar problem, i bought a stage 3 clutchmaster
tried forcing the tranny in , and all i did was burr up the splines.
it took 2 hours, and a small file to get it to slide in.
good luck
THanks.
It’s just a tranny install tho, not touching the clutch … I’ve been lifting the tranny off the jack, and kinda gently pushing it, but no luck sliding it in yet …
I’m guessing you used the file to get rid of the burrs?
you need to take the clutch off , check REAL good for burrs
take a small file and go to work.
trying to file the main shaft isn’t going to work ,you need to take the clutch off
I don’t think i have any burrs …
just curious, why did you take the tranny out,
did you get a different one?
yea, my old cv (inner joint) gave, and blew a hole in the back of the tranny case
Hey Steve,
Try rotating the main shaft of the gearbox to a new position.
Thanks Marc, yea that’s what I’ve been doing, won’t go just yet … guess I need to wiggle it some more … sigh
btw I still got your tip … just got back from a trip tho, I’ll see about getting it to you soon.
you got the wrong year tranny
how you can tell is line up the splines with the old tranny.
possibly try using your old main shaft to slide in.
if you can use your old main shaft
and it dosen,t slide in then you know that you burred up the clutch taking it out. if you didn’t take the tranny out easily
and there was to much pressure on the clutch, you could of realined the clutch, or possibly bent some of the splines.
it’s a 91 tranny, motor is a 90 … both are S1, no damage internally to splines or clutch
i think DB2-R81 has the right idea
keep trying to turn the shaft.
its a pain in the a%s
keep us posted
When we did a motor swap for my brother’s car, we thought the tranny wasn’t lined up, but he got under the car and gave the tranny a shove and it slid right on.
Nice, I hope mine does that! I gave up for the night (working alone) … felt I should stop before I get mad and kick a hole in my door :). Any 604 people feel like dropping by? There might be a cold one in it for ya …
thanks for the replies guys.
I have swapped 3 trannies within 6 months 2 on mine and one on a friend’s teg. The trick i use, is lay down on a creeper, lay the tranny on your chest. Slide under the car. Then slide off the creeper, while under the car. hold the tranny up and rotate clockwise slowly, you’ll feel it line up, plus have someone looking to make sure you got it into the pressure plate correctly. Then spin clockwise. you feel it slide, on it lined up rotate to wear you you can put a bolt in. and voila your done. It might sound complicated but it’s not, should take ya max 15 minutes to get it on. Hey what’s the fastest anyone has dropped a tranny WITHOUT removing the motor?? I’m curious, we dropped one in 2 hours flat, and i was curious if anyone has the same speed. Oh well next month i’ll be swapping trannies again, I hate this Y1. I miss my old JDM s1
