tranny prob, need some advice/help...

ok guys…here is the situation…my car went in the shop on monday to have the tranny pulled, rebuilt, and new clutch, etc…BTW i got the Exedy organic racing clutch and my mechanic thinks its garbage, but anyways…the tranny is REALLY shot, from what he showed me, 3rd gear was the big prob, so he’s getting back to me on prices for what he need to rebuild it with…at the same time, he showed me that one of my CV boots was torn, so thats more money…and one axle is pretty shot, so thats even MORE money…another thing was the shifter i have in there…its a DC sports short shifter…he said it fits terribly in there and tore up the small bushings all around the shifter, etc…so i’m considering just going back to my stock shifter, what do you all think i should do? and as far as the tranny is concerned, the rebuild is gonna be expensive, but would it be a better idea to just try to find a used one, or just rebuild it because i know i’ll be getting a good tranny with new parts inside it?

help me out here guys, tell me what you think…

I guess, I would say rebuild, that way you know who and how the tranny has been driven, even if you get a used one with 30k miles, who knows, those could have been 30k miles of pure hell.

While your in there, get a lightened, chromoly flywheel, it is about an extra 500 bucks, but your engine will rev quicker, it will make a pretty good difference.

Good Luck,

IF you can get a second opinion. Can’t trust some mechanics.

well, lightened flywheel is totally outta the question, sure as hell dont need it for MY application, and i do not have $500 to throw away on it…as far as my mechanic, i trust him alot, me and my family have gone through him for all our honda’s, all the work and prices have been nothing but the best, plus he’s s personal friend and knows his ****, especially since he strictly specializes in honda/acura…

the total cost is going to be $2,000 including one new axel, one cv boot, exedy clutch, installing clutch, rebuilding the whole tranny basically, and resurfacing the flywheel…

whatcha guys think?

So what do you want to know from us? you just said his prices and work are the best, and he is a personal friend, so ask him what HE thinks is the best. not us.

i’m just tryin to see what you guys think about it, and if you think my shifter contributed to my tranny problem, and do you think i should put my stock shifter back in or not…

You can get a used tranny, both axles and some shift stabilizer bushings for $500-600 if you find some good deals. I know that one of my friend locally that is on this board is selling a J1 tranny for $300, then you get your axles for $150 with warranty (after core exchange) and $10 for the bushings to fix your shift problem and your set. That is under $500 right there.
You can rebuild the tranny if you want, but it is a spendy job and you can always just upgrade first and rebuild later when a better tranny needs the work.

Let me know if I can be of any more assistance…

BR - well i def. considered buying a different tranny, but i want to go with the stock tranny, and finding the right tranny with LOW miles is tough to find, seeing that the last they made them was in 1993…plus, you dont know WHAT condition a tranny is in when you buy used, and you could get screwed…so i thought going this way will ensure a good strong tranny without any worries…

If that is what you are going for then I would definately recommend doing that.
If that whole project is going to cost you 2k, it really isnt that bad considering you have to pay for labor…
Are you just going to keep your teg pretty much stock??

Dude it seems like you alreday made up your mind and are not realy seeking an opinion but someone to tell you that you are getting a good deal. The problem is that rebuilding a tranny is not an easy job and unless you get a profesional transmission mechanic you might run into problems. The best thing to do is get a used transmission (JDM vtec) and do a swap. even if you are not looking to build a motor you should go with that tranny anyways since it is better. as for the short shifter messing up your bushings, that is the first time i’ve heard of such a thing. My GSR has had a DC short shifter for 2 years and hassen’t given me any problems. well good luck on the rebuild.

i’m planning on staying basically stock…just bolt-on’s…thats it, and at this point, i just need ur opinions on whether or not i should put my stock shifter back in or not…

thanks guys:)

Dont put the stock shifter back in. Just get some shift stabilizer bushings ($10) and make sure that all of the hardware connecting the shifter to the chassis and linkage is on right.
