Tranny ques? need help on what to buy!?

Whats up fellas,
i have a 90 integra with a b18c swapped in my car. The tranny that came with the engine is screwed! it wont go into 3rd gear!
anyway, the tranny i am using is a b16a tranny cable type from a 88-91 civic. would it be ok to get a s1/j1 tranny instead of a y1 and would this tranny be just as good if not better for my car(talking about the JDM 90-91Integra RSi/XSi tranny) also, how would i know if this is the rsi/xsi tranny instead of the US 90-93
Integra RS/LS/GS Spec.Ed. tranny since they both have the same code. thanks

u.s.-spec trannies are listed as ys1. not s1/j1/y1. so you’ll be fine there…

as for which one to get, it’s entirely up to you. Click Here for a list of the gear ratios of all bseries transmissions: just as a brief summary, the s1/j1 is identical gearing to the us-spec Integra Type R. The JDM YS1 (or usdm 92-93 GSR tranny), which was available with optional LSD, is very similar with a slightly shorter 5th gear. the Y1 is pretty much in the middle ground, with the same final drive as our LS-spec tranny (all cars except the gsr had the same gear ratio so i chose to refer to it as LS–same for all cars tho). I personally will be getting the s1, adding a GSR 5th, and the 4.785 final drive. Should be a fun gearing.

just buy the s1/j1/y1…they only came on JDM cars.

S1 trannys came on 90-91 ls motors. I took one out of a 90 rs so i could drive my car till i got my YS1 back up and running. So there are S1s that came on USDM cars, not just the JDM cars. Just my .02

goo…my bad. thanks for scolding me but not too harshly.

thanks zoomintegra for the site, very usefull… for me…

humm … just wondering what is the final drive??

the final drive gear is the ring gear that is around the differential. If you were to take your tranny apart you’d see a large gear on your diff., that’s the final drive. it’s also called the “final driven gear” some places. i’ll get a screenshot of it from the helms and put it up later today. but now i’m off for a fun-filled field trip to the Honda dealer to find out some prices on rebuild materials! whee!!!

ok … so the final drive is a “gear” used with each gear??? I mean this final drive is like a universal gear witch will make the other turns…? is that?.. i hope…

tanks for you patience guys

yeah…it’s the gear attached to the differential, that gets “driven” by all the other gears, thus causing the differential to turn, thus causing your wheels to turn, thus causing your car to go zoom.

that is, unless you’re like me and have a bad differential bearing (best case scenario, pics coming after finals when i drop my tranny) in which case your differential sounds something similar to a woman in very painful labor, thus causing your car NOT to go zoom, instead causing your car to sit in a parking lot undriven. :frowning:

LOL understand now!!!

so you were right when you said that JDM ITR tranny was quicker cause i didnt know the importance of the fnal gear… can I only change the final gear???

i hope so…

I like custom … I m going to fit a b18c5 on my tranny with a bigger final drive!!! now i understand

THANKS A LOL !!!

sure can. it’s like 10 bolts or so, maybe 12 i forget. but yeah you can just remove the diff, and swap final drive gears. www.inlinefour.com has the JDM final drive gear for a little under 500. which is pretty steep, but it’s new. however you can often find a full tranny on the parts trader for just a little more, like 800 or so. good luck!
