Tranny rebuild experts: Rebuilt tranny, not going in 2nd

Hey guys… about two weeks ago I finished my rebuild on my b17 tranny. I replaced all of the synchros and springs, a countershaft bearing, and the 3-4 sleeve. There was some wear on the 5th gear side of the 5-r sleeve and also some wear on both sides of the 1-2 sleeve. There was wear on pretty much all of the dog teeth on every gear but nothing ridiculous. Before I installed the tranny, I tried bench shifting through all of the gears. I had a little trouble getting it in 2nd gear but decided to go ahead and install it. I figured once everything was oiled up and moving that 2nd would get easier to go into gear. Well I got it installed and Im definitely having trouble getting it into 2nd gear. Every other gear is butter. Its been in for two weeks and I have yet to grind a gear. I just have a hard time getting it in 2nd gear. Once it goes into 2nd its definitely notchy. It has no problem going out of 2nd. It doesn’t grind going into 2nd. Anyone have some ideas on why its doing this? Bad 1-2 sleeve? Dog teeth worn on 2nd gear? I know when the sleeve was installed on the hub that it had no problem sliding up and down it. I have a spare sleeve from my ls tranny that I can try out since all b series 92 and up 1-2 sleeves are interchangeable. Also, since Im probably going to have to open the tranny back up, Im thinking about throwing in my ls 5th gear set. Do I only need the 5th gear set( mainshaft and countershaft) synchro/synchro spring, and 5-r sleeve from the ls tranny?

Dude if you have no input on my situation, don’t comment. This is very easy to read and the punctuation is pretty spot on for a forum post.

Theres no hope. Im losing faith in the community.

Good luck

You’re not gonna get a lot if help treating people like that. Good luck figuring out your Trans.

The point is the guy was offering no help. If it’s something that you just can’t understand, ok make a comment about it. If I’m writing about one topic, I just don’t see the point in spacing out sentences. I’ve read far worse where there were no periods, commas, question marks etc… so now I will use a space because I’m going on about my tranny…

The transmission is in the car so I can’t snap any pics of the gears… I do remember it being difficult to shift to 2nd by hand when I had the gear set out. So I think that eliminates any problem with the shift change/ shift fork assembly. There is some movement towards 2nd, there is just something preventing it from going all the way in 2nd

It is highly unlikely that someone here will be able to give you an accurate answer… Transmissions are one of those things that needs to be right in front of you so things can be properly examined etc.

Either way it sounds like you’re going to have to pull it back out… I’d take it to a performance shop that knows Honda transmissions if you yourself can’t figure it out.

And not to beat a dead horse but yes that “wall of text” is an annoying read, and honestly, I didn’t even read it all. The more effort you put into accurately describing the issue, along with proper syntax and form, the more people are likely to help.

Your first post should have been split into about 4 paragraphs if not more.

Sorry I can’t shed any light on your problem though.

I have complete confidence in fixing the problem, I’m just trying to figure out what it could be so I can have the part ordered or pulled out of my other tranny before I pull this one back out.

Jesus people, there is absolutely nothing hard about reading my first post. I mean it’s not like I’m trying to write a college paper. This is what annoys me about forums and it happens on forums of all kinds. You get people who live on these forums who just go around telling people what they said wrong in their post just to try and make the poster look stupid instead of actually giving some input on the topic at hand.

I tried to give an honest opinion… Pull it out and open it up.

If you’ve been on as many forums as you say, you definitely know that you are not going to get 100% accurate information… All you’re going to get is spitball-ideas and guesswork.

How many trannys have you rebuilt? I did ask for tranny experts, people who have had experience with these types of problems. It’s obvious that I will have to open it back up, but I don’t want to keep my car down while I’m having to order parts. Right now it’s really easy to just skip 2nd.

And yes I’ve been on so many forums. Anywhere from Tacoma, accord, Camry forums to dog training, body building, car audio forums and all using this same user name lol

I’ve never rebuilt a transmission… Nor was there a claim to have done such. My response was quite simple…

Just because I have not rebuilt one, doesn’t mean that my response was inaccurate.

I would be willing to bet that there are multiple things that could cause what you’re experiencing… hence what I said.

With the attitude you’re copping with people I can guarantee that you’re not going to get shit for helpful responses. Good work sir!

Well you obviously don’t know shit about transmissions so you shouldn’t even be posting in this thread. Only reason you even posted was because of my response to what the first guy said.

Yup… And you know so much about them that you installed a transmission when you knew it had a 2nd gear issue, under the assumption that MTF would solve the issue.

Knowledgeable stuff right there.

Well once again you are showing your ignorance of how trannys work. A lot of times the gears need to be spinning for things to kind of line up to get it into gear. For example, have you ever noticed how its sometimes hard to get it into first or reverse from a dead stop? I also took it to a transmission shop and expressed my concerns on 2nd gear before ever installing it. He bench shifted it while turning the input shaft and was able to get it to shift. He told me that he thought it would be good to go so i installed it. So no I didn’t just install a tranny with a potential problem without a little insight from people who deal with these daily. Do I wish I would have looked a little more into the problem? Yes but I learned a lot

There is something called a synchro spring that rides inside of the synchro ring and sleeve. I would check that since you say its notchy and pops out easily. It sounds like the sleeve is catching on it while engaging the gear and being displaced therefore not holding the sleeve in place and it pops out. Thats also a piece that can easily be installed incorrectly if your unfamiliar with things.

Its a small circular ring that looks alot like the locking ring on the end of the splines of an axle.

Good luck

That’s what I was told initially by the guy at the transmission shop. He recommended me swapping out the spring with my old one and seeing if it would go in gear. So I did that and it made no difference. I’m not have problems with any pop outs though. This is a problem I think existed before I ever took the tranny apart. I think I remember it not wanting to go in 2nd when I first opened it up and was trying to figure out how everything worked. But I appreciate the response.

Best way to fix something you cant fix is to

Replace

It with a

Known 100% working or

Brand new.

If youre trouble shooting and have tried everything then maybe its time to just get another transmission.

They aren’t expensive.

Cable gsr trannys are hard to find. And no I haven’t tried everything. I’m thinking its the 1-2 sleeve or 2nd gear itself. I was just trying to get a confirmation
