Tranny Seal? Wtf!!

dangit (for lack of a better term)! i hate my car. my tranny seal went bad, and oil freakin’ leaked all over the place. it’s a five-speed, so, yes, it is oil, not atf. anyone got any ideas?

i’m a little on end about the whole situation, so, please excuse the attitude, lol.

The only seals that can fail on a tranny are the Axle seals. They are pretty cheap and easy to replace after the axles / half shaft are removed. I have the part numbers and prices if you need them. The only other place that oil can leak out of the tranny is the drain plug.

well, has anyone ever heard of this seal going bad. not on just our cars, but other late-model hondas? i’m almost a member of the 200,000 mile club, so i figure the seal or gasket, is pretty old.

2ndJenn is right, if your leaking tranny fluid all over the place it is most likely coming out of the axle seals.
The only other place that it would leak would be from the casing, but that is very unlikely unless you blew up your tranny on a misshift or a bearing went and split the casing.

but wouldn’t i have felt it? like on a mis-shift i would have felt or heard grinding, or sumthin? i will say this, the oil that it was leaking was “metallic-y”, like had itty-bitty pieces or rubbings of metal in it. clutch is still good, no first-gear stalls. i’m clueless.

yes… that’s what BR was getting at. “if” it had been from the casing, it would be due to a misshift etc, which you would have known.

so it’s probably the axle seal.

the 5-speed tranny takes motor oil. if the axle seals are not leaking then it could be leaking out where the shifter goes into the tranny. could also be leaking from the casing(silicone dont last forever) or out of the spline. unless your CV boot is torn and it’s spitting grease(oil like) out.

those are jus suggestions but make sure you’re leaking engine oil first.(could be your engine oil thats leaking also)

You can put motor oil in the tranny, that is how it used to be done before MTF was made. Usually a 10w30 would work fine.
The Honda MTF is formulated to work better though. I wont put anything but the honda MTF in my tranny…

technically you can use motor oil… but not highly recommended.

yeah… but many people still use 10w30 in their trannies. i think it even says in the helm’s that MTF is recommended but 10w30 is fine (i think it says that can’t remember)

true. i’m not gonna argue with you guys. thats what i use too(honda MTF) in my car. alot of the fast lube places like Jiffy Lube still uses 10w30(motor oil) in honda and acura manual trans. and we do the same too at our shop.
