Tranny swap, or new car?

Ok, I have a '93 Integra GS with an AT that I got from my sis for $500. I really want a 5-speed. Should I try to do the swap, or should I pick up a '94 Integra LS with a 5-speed for $2800? I really like the G2 tegs, so I don’t know which one to do. Buying the '94 will take some convincing with my wife too. Any advice?

Do the manual swap for around 500 and save the money you would have spent on the 94 ls. Use that money for go fast parts and to invest to make more money… Like hitting up another 500 teg and sell it for 1500.00 then you can keep doing that and make more money.

Manual swap is NOT hard but time consuming if you have never done a motor swap or transmission swap.

Good luck.

Ok, I’ll be impressed if I can get the manual swap done for only $500. It looks like there is a lot of stuff I need to buy for it. The time part is the biggest problem. I have never done anything like this, and I use this car as a daily driver. If I’m LUCKY I’ll get enough help to get it done in a weekend, but I don’t know anyone here who could help. I just moved to Monterey, California from Virginia.

Do the swap. It’s not as much as the other car. Besides, you professed your love for G2s, so don’t go gettin’ another ride when your G2 can be fixed. It won’t feel the same, & you won’t have to convince her of anything. She seems like a smart woman; listen to her & keep your G2.

You should be able to find someone on here to help you. Cali is full of G2ICers. Many of the people I’ve met on here are awesome, & if my experience in FLA is any indication, you’ll be shiftin’ gears in no time. Good luck.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Hopefully someone will read this thread that is willing to help.

Doing the auto to manual isnt easy if u don’t have all the right stuff already but it can be done. Its hard to say depending on the source u get ut stuff from too depending on how much it will actually cost u once everything is done. And dont forget fluids will need to be change so that adds more money. Some people who has done this has claim they spent anywhere from $500-1200 budget at the end so source is all depends.

Check ur local craigslist and find the best price and part for the swap. If u need help let us know.

Well i hope i can help if anything although i am about 5 hrs away i think.

I have done more than 3 manual conversions for less around 500. You got to be like me though… retail prices are for the birds. I refuse to pay full price for almost everything. Yes you can do the swap. Yes it is time consuming. Yes you will appreciate your car that much more.
I will send you some parts for the swap if you pay shipping. I have BOXES full of JUNK… unwanted junk too.
Here is something to think about… find someone that has one of the same cars that is wrecked or with a bad motor that wants to sell it for around 500.00 or so. Then transfer parts to whichever one you want to keep and sell the rest and make your money back. THIS CAN HAPPEN TOO… patience will be your friend.
Not people who tell you this and that or their opinions. IF YOU REALLY want this and KNOW how to stick to a budget you can do this for lets just say 650 for someone that does not have any hustle skills… Then you are still 1800 up for go fast goodies.
I saw a tranny for 100 recently on this site. I picked up an ls tranny at pick n pull on half off day for 39.99 with the shift linkage!!! After tax it was like 42 and change.
They have 30 dollar all you can stick in a wheel barrow days around here ALOT…

I did my AT-MT swap myself…$300 for the LS trans was the most anything cost for me, maybe $250 in miscillaneous parts like shifter bushings, starter bolts, clutch cable brackets, pedal assembly, etc…

Just swapped my Y1 B16 Cable trans w/ LSD in last night, and absolutely love it, so my opinion is stick with it, and do the 5-spd swap.:manual:

Werd to da9b16. Listen to that guy. Many of my friends have done the swap on civics, preludes, tegs, etc. for around $500 or so. Took 1 friend of mine 3 days on his 'lude; 1st time no less! It can be done, just keep an eye for the good deals & don’t lose hope.

Told you you’d find help on here. Might even be able to convince RiccyGSR to shoot over in return for some flow & beers of course. Get those parts from da9b16. Best of luck man.

We’ll see. Five hours is a long drive just to help someone work on their car when you don’t really know them. I have to get all the stuff I need first anyways. I saw there is a junk yard about an hour away called Honda Heaven. I could probably find what I need there.

Yeah, they may be right up your alley. If anything, start goin’ to build repoire & get in good w/ them. Then they’ll help you out by givin’ a heads up when they get parts you need. Trust me, it works. Your greatest asset @ a yard is the people who work there. Perfect timing & a tool set don’t hurt either.

:getsome: :manual:

I just found a junk yard online that says it has a '93 Teg MT for $375, and they are only 30 minutes away.

Grab it.

You can get the linkage on ebay if you need to. Or is it complete? The pedal assembly can be found there too. The bay isn’t bad, you just gotta be careful. If the seller has 95% or better rating & has been there @ least a year & a half, They should be OK to deal with. I found the evaporator box on there for $20.00 Shipped!! That piece brand new is $250-300.00!! It’s been workin’ fine for over a year now.
Have fun gettin’ everything together & remember:

BTW- Did they say if it was a short geared or long? That is a choice you have to make. Can you deal w/ 4000+RPMs in 5th @ 80MPH? Steady on the highway? In return you get some fast change times & peppy, useable torque.
Great for the straight line. If not, & you just want a good daily driver,w/ a useable powerband for highway & runnin’ the streets; make sure it’s a long geared YS1.

How to tell? Ask them if it’s from an LS, LS-S, GS, RS, or GSR. If it’s GSR, then it’s short. Any of the others is a long geared.
:getsome: :manual:

I’m grabbing the Jdm S1 cable tranny today hopefully. Again I don’t drive over 80 mph at all or at least not all the times. I am usually steady stable on the foot at 65-73mph thats it.

Only time i ever go 80mph+ is passing up someone thats is annoying or whatever reasons.
So being at 3800-4000 should be ok. My A1 is at roughly 3500-3700 at 75 in 5th.

Well even at 65-73 in my Y1 B16 trans it’s annoying as hell lol…kinda wish i kept the YS1 trans sometimes…not.

I would have to say because due to loud exhaust and or vibrating will make things even more annoying.

Get the DC2 with a 5 Speed

damn a lot of people on this site are down to do that auto to manual swap. i’ve swapped motors and ripped the entire car apart but i would hate doing auto to manual swap. its one of those things where you get fed up and you lose interest. i sold my automatic and bought a manual car.

You might get fed up if you’re not using the car everyday; but he has no choice. If he’s gonna do it, it’ll be done all in one shot, (a long weekend maybe.) not over the couse of a month, week, whatever.
