Trans Problems....

My car has had some problems staling and shifting gears… I automatically thought it was the trans, so I took it to get a lil performance test and I was right… or so I think. The guy said that there was a problem, but he wasnt exactly sure what it was until he got in there and checked it out… the only problem is thier wantin almost $400 to do that. I dunno, he may be tellin the truth, but Id really hate to get screwed. I had a '95 eon (dont laugh) that had some problems and one place told me it was the computer, so I replaced it and the car ended up doing the same junk and come to find out it was the transmission. I dont mind puttin moneyin that car at all, but I just dont want to get played with. Does anyone have any suggetions on what I shoulddo, or any tips on how I can be a lil more sure its my transmission? I have custom spark plug wires and one of the got disconnected some how and was makin my car stall and cut off and junk… so I just wanna be sure… thanks and sorry so long…

Could you explain the problem a little more? What exactly is it doing? Grinding? Under what conditions does it stall? etc…

no its not grinding… whenever i rev the engine, it sounds like metal clinging smewhere, but its not load or notin… it sounds like littl bits kinda. And it does it when its hot outside. it sometimes gets jerky like it wants to cut off ad it hs a few times. and it doesnt change gears like it used to… it kinda hesitates. someone said it could be the carberator. but i cant figure it out. I candrive it all night and it never stalls on me, but i cn tell its not changing gears well… anything else you need to know?

Ok first thing you need to know – if anyone tells you “it’s the carburetor”. Punch them. There’s no carb on our cars – it’s fuel injected. Ok, I didn’t realize it from your first post, but I’m thinkin now that you have an automatic?
I don’t know a lot about them, but it could just be low on transmission fluid? Definitely check that before you take it to a mechanic to rip the transmission open.
I can’t access my helms manual right now (long story), but maybe someone with a manual could check out the transmission troubleshooting guide and look for the symptoms?

When you check the the fluid , make sure that the fluid doesn’t have a metallic glow or look in it. That means there’s metal shavings in there which means you got a bigger problem.

I just got through putting oil and transmission fluid in my car not too long ago… maybe an hour ago… and on the way home, my car was doin the same thing. whenever Im driving its acting as if it wants to shut off… the rpm’s are bouncing like crazy. I also put some STP in thegas tank. can I still check to see if theres metal shavings even though I just got through putting fluidin in? Another thing is my car gets really hot after driving it a shor period of time. however, the temperature gauge sys its always fine … is that normal? What the hell is goin on with my car???
 :frowning:

You should be able to check the fluid now , how did it drive after you put the fluid in as far as the tranny? What is the range that your rpm’s are bouncing ? You might want to check if your ecu is putting out any fault codes , its under the upper part of the carpet on the passenger side of the car . Just pull the carpet back and you’ll see this plate that’s bolted down , it has a little window that has the light behind it , that’s your ecu . Do you have a maintenance book other than the owner’s manual ?

could it be the heat shield?
