Transmission lock out?

Ok, the other day i was driving to work and went to switch from first to second. Well the clutch felt like it was burned out and it slipped bad going into gear. I thought to myself the clutch must be on its way out, gotta replace that next chance i get but when i went to go to third it wouldnt go in gear at all. I tried to go back to second and was locked out of there too.

I ended up towing the car to my storage where i pulled the transmission out to replace the clutch. Clutch was definately done but i have seen worse ones before so it wasn’t something catastrophic. I replaced that, the pressure plate and throw out bearing. Put the whole thing back together and still had nothing. I was locked out of every gear. I can put it in gear with the car off and start it up with the pedal to the floor, even release the clutch and go in that gear but it wont come out of gear and wond go into another one.

I thought it was the cable but i just put another one in yesterday from the junkyard and same thing.

The transmission gave me no problems whatsoever before this. All gears shifted like butter and there was never any pop outs or grinds at any rpm at all. I have been driving the car since last november with no transmission issues. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Im stumped.

Im thinking (hoping) i got a bad clutch cable from the junkyard and that its just stretched out but in the back of my mind im fearing the worst. Thanks guys.

What is the condition of your shifter bushings? Its very common for them to be in bad shape especially if they are the original ones. When they go bad it can be a real pain in the ass to get into gear, I’ve been there.

Poly ones are cheap. There are several brands available, this worked well for me: http://www.jegs.com/i/Energy+Suspension/355/16-1101G/10002/-1

If the bushings are not the issue then you will likely have to crack the transmission open, good luck.

Im afraid of this. ^^^^ I have crawled under the car a few times working on this and didnt see anything wrong with the bushings. They look like the originals but still very firm. When the bushings went out for you did it feel weird before hand like the clutch slipping?

When I had this specific issue it was with my old 88 Accord with a nearly identical in design in regards to the cable clutch and the shift linkage setup. One day the shifter took a few tries to get into gear. By the end of the day I had to limp home because I could only get it into 2nd gear. The large, round front bushing (top one pictured in the link) at the transmission looked ok from the outside but after unbolting it I discovered it was disintegrating on the inside. The smaller round bushing on the bottom of the shifter mechanism was OK. The odd looking bushing in the pic is located beneath the shifter was torn. I had to use OEM rubber bushings and they were fine, but with having the Urethane ones now in my Integra I can tell you its much firmer on the shift action.

The crappy part is the exhaust is in the way. My Teg started as a project so it was much easier to do with the exhaust and drive-train out of the car. You need to remove the catalytic converter for access.

If your 2 long shift linkage arms are rusty like mine were this is a good time to remove them and clean them up. You definitely don’t want those to break. If you do remove both of them you will have to remove a part referred to as the “bitch pin” where one of the arms attaches to the transmission. You can leave it in place if you just do the bushings. Here is a good how-to on it. http://www.performanceforum.com/wesvann/honda/bitch/bitch.html Its a lot of fun to do on your back with the car on jackstands:gunright:

One last thought. You can see the action and check for extra play by getting underneath the car and watching it while you have someone you trust hold in the clutch and run the shifter through the gears. Good luck! This is one job having a lift would make much easier.

Well i finally got under the car and the bushing is in great shape so there is no need to replace it. Im stumped as to what this could be. Anyone with some other ideas as well? I gotta get the car back on the road. haha. Story of my life.

you ever figure out what the issue was? i was going home normally absolutely no bashing, shifted from 1st to 2nd…tried to go to 3rd, wouldnt go, wouldnt go into any gears except 2nd

I honestly cant remember if I did fix it or not. I tore the car completely apart shortly after this. http://forums.g2ic.com/showthread.php?201601-ls-vtecstitch-build-take-2 I still have the tranny but I haven’t opened it yet. I honestly forgot about having this issue until I was going through all my old started threads. lol

my car is parked until maybe a friend can get to it…a friend of mine said it sounded like possibly a fork got bent SOMEHOW in the trans or it’s the gear selector. hopefully i’m about to trade my blades for a trans and some other parts…at worse swap out…at best i can put 4th and 5th gears in the b16 trans and get it fixed, get my MPG back and still have the take off and a good/strong daily

so 4 years later i pulled this tranny off the shelf to put in another car i picked up to drive. I decided to open it up and low and behold the final drive/ differential bearing died causing the final drive to get tossed around in the transmission. I replaced the bearing, shaved down and cleaned up the insides of the transmission and checked the other bearings as well as gears and syncros. After installing it in my new car, everything feels great again. on to pics:

how much was the final drive gear/diff bearing?

somewhere around $30 - $40

word cool…gives me hope for my trans
