it is sometimes hard to get into forth. it just doesnt want to go in. and 9/10 times i try 5th i have to fight with it for a while and by them i done slowed back down to much. i was thinkin it was the clutch becasue it is sometimes easier to shift without it. but the other day i was doing like 65 in 5th and i had been in 5th for like 10 min and it just jumped out of 5th into nuetral…what couold it be.?
Start by adding new transmission oil (MTF) and a new clutch cable.if that doesnt work prob. new to have ur tranny worked on, or replaced.
mine was doing the same thing…
1st squeeles when going into
2nd Grinds when going into
3rd pops out after a minute
4th whines when in
5th only stayed in for 2-5 seconds and back out
reverse?? huh never heard of it
(if you do not want to read all that, take your tranny out and check the input shaft for play, back and forth and side to side, if it has play your head bearing is bad, if there is no play your syncros are bad, either rebuilt it yourself or buy a new/used tranny and swap them out.)
Soo I took my tranny in my basement apart (which had a blown differential)
and took my existing one out, and took it apart. Inside I found… the head/main bearring inside (the one that sits on the gearset with the input shaft, the one closest to the block) was toast There was one ball of 12 left in the bearring, pretty big bearing like 2-2.25" diameter and the metal ring that goes inbetween all the ball was all chewed up.
I found the remaining balls in the bottom of the casing all chewed up from the gears along with the metal.
So I rebuilt it a month ago using spare parts and no prob since then (knock on wood)
If you are comfortable with you mechanical know how I would go to standard/advanced/pep boys or a junk yard even and get that bearing and replace it. There are about 14 bolts holding the 2 case pieces together and one for reverse (yes its on the outside of the tranny) There is a split ring in the 3/8 square hole closest to the tranny mount that you have to release as well or they wont come apart, and 5 bolts inside 2 holding the reverse gear selector and 3 holding the 1-5 gear selector and the 3 shift forks are on 2 rods which just sit in the slots in the casing, same as reverse gear its on a rod that sits in a hole on the casing, the 2 main gear sets have to be pulled out together or they wont come out I dont know why this is but thats how it is. As for the differential that can stay in.
I wouldnt do all that unless your input shaft has play, take your tranny out and wobble the input shaft, if it moves the bearing is taost f not do not tear the tranny apart.
As for time to do this, it took me 30 minutes to tear my old tranny apart, and 3 hours the next day to take my existing tranny out, tear that apart, clean the parts in a parts cleaner, air blow them out, same as the casings to get the metal shavings out, reassemble the tranny, dry the edge, spray grey gasket maker on the edge, set the outter case on, bolt it all back together, and put it all back in my car. Its relatively easy.
Allthough I was using a lift, but no air tools or tranny jack. All arm tools.
