transmission questions

whats up guys. ive been working on my integra here and there being that i just turned seventeen i don’t have a lot of the green. so anyway what i was posting about. when it comes to changing the transmission fluid, ive heard that if your motor and transmission are over 150k and the mtf has never been changed that you should not worry about changing the fluid. they say not to because metal shavings that get in the transmission oil allow it to have friction and not slip gears. is this true?

also i know people say its usually not as necessary in a manual because its at a low temperature unlike a AT which they say is constanly moving and a MT fluid lasts the life of the transmission itself.

But, i have 135k on the clock and i was wondering would it not help if i changed it? i just ordered some acura mtf and thought about just changing the transmission fluid because i dont know if it was ever done by the po.
p.s i searched on the internet and here but none of the situations were really like mines because most people tell them about a car when the buy it. the guy i got my car was a straight idiot and he didnt even know what i was talking about in reference to the clutch biting point. i probably should have just :run: when he sold me the car. but it was a beautiful in my eyes though a piece of crap compared to some g2’s haha. but thanks guys for your help. just trying to figure it out all on my own.

There is some truth, in the sense that with old/high mileage stuff, your ‘gunky fluid’ is actually helping hold the internals together.

135k isn’t extreme and I would say that you are ok… the main time people run into these issues are on Automatics that are “power flushed”… if all you do is pull the drain bolt, then refill the trans, you’ll be fine in my opinion.

alright thank you sir:up:

If the simple transmission flush does not work, I have personally used GM syncromesh with friction modifiers transmission fluid and it helped with my grinding. I heard this product is hard to get so many have used Redline transmission fluid as well. Again, if you are having transmission problems, this is just a band aid, but if your low on the green, hopefully this will get you around for awhile.

I’ve read that Pennzoil Synchromesh is re-branded GM fluid… Whether or not that is true, I put it in my transmission and it did lessen the grinding issues.

As stated by DA808CHOPSHOP said, this shouldn’t be thought of as a fix… it is definitely a band-aid for an aging transmission.

op, you’re thinkng of automatic transmissions, with the gear slippage after flush. and even then, a drain and fill would be fine. maybe not flush though. any slippage in a standard transaxle would be caused by the clutch and have nothing to do with fluid.
honda mtf is good. i’ve heard the syncromesh stuff is hard on the brass blocking rings

thanks guys for your responses. to welfare, so you flush out a standard transmission and slippage happens it would be because of the clutch? i thought it went for both AT and MT. but thanks for bringing that to my attention. last question is that is it okay regardless of the milage on a manual transaxle you can flush it? thanks in advance guys

you can’t"flush" an MT, as unlike an AT, there is no pump circulating fluid. you can drain and fill an MT. you dn’t typically flush transaxles either. usually drain and fill, since a flush machine needs to be run inline between the transaxle and the cooler. which can be difficult or not possible with a transaxle.
when you flush a transmission with very old fluid it can slip because along with the old fluid goes clutch material. personally, IMO, if a transmission can’t take a flush it needs a rebuild anyways

I use Pennzoil Synchromesh works great for the pass couple years and I track my car.
