Transmission Swap

I currently have a 1990 Integra GS 4-Door. I do a lot of traveling in my car and can’t seem to get over the fact that the car sits at such a high RPM at cruising speeds. I know this is relative to the non-existance of a 5th gear. I have considered several options in an attempt to have a 5th gear, but none of them seem possible. Would it at all be possible to harness a 5 speed automatic transmission from a 5th generation Prelude and install it in place of my existing 4 speed automatic. I am aware that this would also include a gauge pod swap as well as a gear selector swap. Is this possible???

with enough money , duct tape , and a hot enough welding torch anything is possible. The simple solution would be to the sell the car and buy an integra with a 5speed manual trans. The next simple solution would be to sell the integra and buy a car with a 5speed automatic trans. The next solution would be to swap out your automatic transmission for an integra 5speed manual transmission.

okay now the automatic tegs should be about the same as the Manual tegs in 5th gear…

Automatic 4th gear lets say 70mph should be around 3000-3300RPMS
Manual 5th gear at 70mph should be around that same area 3000-3300RPMS

So going from an Automatic to a Manual Is not gonna help your RPM sit lower, You really have no choice but to deal with it…

Unless you got the money do a 5speed conversion and Put in a 5th gear that has a Longer ratio… that means pulling the tranny apart and replacing the 5th gear with a different gear to make the RPMS lower and TOP speed increased…

Thanks, now that was helpful. With that said though…I am due for a rebuild on my current transmission anyway. Is it convieniently possible for me to swap the final gear in my 4 speed automatic? It appears to me that the power and torque comes from the power band in my 3rd gear anyway. Are there other sets of gears from Honda/Acura 4 speeds that I could swap that would allow my engine to sit at lower rpm but still offer torque when demanded? Unfortunatly I don’t know a thing when it comes to gear ratios. I see the effects of a good or bad one, but I don’t kow the difference numarically.

they make an adaptor plate to use a b-series tranny on an h-series motor, im sure you could use it to do the opposite as long as you can get the torque converter to work. you would still need custom tranny mounts(front, rear, and side).

I highly suggest going from Auto to Manual, you’ll love the differences it makes, I know it might take some money but overall Its WORTH IT in the END…

Its gonna cost you more money to replace your 4th gear in your Automatic transmission, I Dont know much about automatic trannys so I cant be much help there,

I say just do the Manual Transmission conversion, you’ll feel a huge quickness differences between the auto and the manual…

Automatic trannys are too complex, thats why I never tooken one apart, but the Manual trannys are way easier…

yes they do make an adapter plate for that… I saw it and I was like wow crazy lols =D

I suggest you shouldn’t do the prelude tranny thing you suggested up there… I dont think its worth the time and money, because its gonna cost you so so much more…

You will need Custom Adapter plates, Custom Front, Rear and Side Transmission mounts to be made, plus Custom Axles along with halfshaft, then wiring it all up… making it work… then comes custom shift cable also… Its gonna cost a PRETTY PENNY…

Alright, I think I have come to a conclusion regarding my swap/conversion. With a bit more research I learned a few things that have been greatly helpful. I discovered a company that manufactures motor swap kits for DA Integras. Thus, I can install a H22 motor and transmission into my car. When I started considering any modification, it was at a time when motor swaps for DA’s weren’t doable. Now that there is a kit available, I may just have to tackle that. Now I think I will install an H22 with automatic transmission from a 5th generation Prelude.

I will have a great deal more torque and power, and my RPM’s will be lower at higher speeds. The real beauty of this is that the 5th generation Prelude automatics had one of those Tiptronic type shifters. My question now is…did the 5th generation Preludes have 5 speed automatics or 4 speed??? Either way, I think this is what I will do.

its a four-speed Sequential SportShift transmission and it doesnt come with ATTS (Active Torque Transfer System).

What is an Active Torque Transfer System? Also, with the prelude transmission being a 4 speed as well, will the car still rev as high or are the ratios different enough to bring the RPM’s down at higher speeds?

ATTS reduces understeer. The rev limit is 6600rpm for the autos, but with a few modifications to the ecu and rom, you can fix that.

I am really not too concerned with modifying anything, let alone the ECU and other computers. I use my integra as my daily driver to and from school and work, but I would just really like something more exciting than what it is now. My goal with this drivetrain swap is simply to add some power and increase the efficiency of the transmission. As far as the rev limiter being at 6600 rpm, thats pretty close to what my engine in my integra is like presently. I am more concerned about where the needle on the tach will sit when i am cruising at 70-90 mph.

i think it will be the same as it is now with your b18.
