trouble starting when cold

when the car is sitting for awhile i start the car, but the idle drops really low, and sometimes just cranks and doesn’t start. what i have to do is turn the key and press the gas at the same time.

the car bogs down, but then once it gets about 1500 rpms it’s fine. the car runs fine, it’s just problems when starting, and only when it’s cold does it do it.

could it be the starter, i just replaced the coil (non-OEM), wires relatively new (non-OEM), plugs are new as well…

tell me what the problem could be, so i can fix it before it becomes serious.

btw, i tried a search, and couldn’t find people with the exact same problem as me

thanks

Have you looked at your:

  • Air filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Battery
  • Battery connections
  • Starter connections

I’ll look at the Haynes troubleshooting guide for you later.

my air filter is good, my fuel filter is recently changed, my battery has been changed in the past 5000 miles, my battery connections look to be good, i will put the terminals on tighter though (is this the only thing to check for the battery?)

and the starter connections… i hvae no idea on, where should i look?

thanks for the help

any help?

could be your Main Fuel Relay. it’s only like 40 bucks, and is notorious for failing on our tegs. the symptoms are “usually” when it’s hot, but more often when you do a quick run to the store, and back in real quick, and then it cranks but doesn’t turn over. then after you rest for a bit, it usually catches and is fine for a week or so, and then repeats, etc.

i way to check is, when your car doesn’t catch, you can fit the relay and see if that helps it. you can also remove it and check the conections using a voltmeter.

read this, it should help.
