Turning h4's into h4h's

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my way of using h4 bulbs with jdm one pieces. I dont want to hack my lights up so I decided to hack my bulbs up. This is the only one I’ve done so far so its a bit rough but i test fit it and it works.

Basically what I did was compare an old h4h to a new h4 and mark and trim the h4 to fit in the h4h hole. Its pretty self explanatory but if you try this, make sure you mark on the bulb where it needs to be cut. Don’t go by eye. I used a pair of dykes to do the cutting and it was probably the worst tool to use. I recommend a dremel or small sheetmetal snips. With the dykes it took me about two hours while also conversing with my roomate lol. I know I could’ve done it faster with concentration and the right tools. Here’s a couple pictures.

On the left is a brand new h4 and on the right is my modified brand new h4.

This shows the h4,the modified h4, and the burnt out h4h.

wow this will diff be a awsome DIY job for the rainy/snowy days…is ther anything el differnt besides the trimmin having to do on the bulbs?>(like any re-wiring sort of thing…or can i simply plug them right in??..i might be doing the samw and takin pics to show process

I just did the other one to match and it took me like 30 minutes as opposed to the first taking me like 2 hours. I put em in and aimed the lights as said in the teg tips and its awesome. I bought the bulbs for $18 at wal-mart. Sylvania’s with a little blue tint. But no, theres no wiring changes, they plug right in and you dont have to modify your headlight housings at all which is why i did it this way rather than the way already discussed in the teg tips section.

nvm …just bought a set of h4h bulbs…but bump for a good DYI job

I tried to score a set of H4H bulbs, but all I can find is those blueish lookin ones. I want the old look on my teg, none of this HID shit for my old school look. Might have to do this on some cheap ass H4s. Old school look is sexy to me.

Got a pic of the modified H4 next to the H4H from a side on angle?

Ill post it later today after i get my camera out of my car haha.

One thing you are forgeting is that the part that you cut on the HA bulb is spot welded close to the glass of the bulb. While on thr H4H it is welded further down so that the bulb goes further into the headlight giveing more light output.

I noticed that but it doesnt seem to make a difference. About that pic, Ive been busy all day installing my turbo kit so i havent had time to get it. Im about to put in my 255 lph and finish socketing the ecu then off to bed so Ill try to get it tomorrow.

oem H4H

I’ve got a set that has never been used. If you have not located one they are stanly’s 55/65 or something like that. Make me an offer it’s yours

well, getting hold of H4H in anything other than stock replacement is impossible here in the UK, but I wanted some more output on my DA6 so i thought I’d give this a go with a set of H4 ‘rally’ bulbs (stock colour, 100w/60w hi/lo).

Result - weird. The H4 have a glare guard, which the H4H, which are designed for the JDM one piece housings, don’t.

Currently, dipped beam gives me the best output, and looking against a reflective window, the result is BRIGHT, and although scatter pattern isn’t brilliant, it still looks like full beam.

Full beam has now become dipped, but only the top half of the headlight housing lights up (I assume due to the H4 glare guard). The result looks like a dipped beam, and isn’t too bright, but the scatter pattern appears too be upside down and lighting the sky, not the road lol.

Anyone know of any brand that does a H4H high output bulb? I don’t want blue or ultra white or anything, just a high output H4H (100w/60w) would be brilliant.

Thanks

i’m assuming full beam means high beam…i think i have the same problem, i just did this and my high beam’s are useless, they don’t light up the road at all, but the low beams are fine? anyone else have this?

reviving an old thread but does this work well… also in some of the H4 bulbs I have looked at have no glare guard maybe I am just looking in the wrong Place?

what b16da9 is correct. the bulb filament positioning will be off.

everyone thinks just because they can make a bulb fit the housings that it will be fine… well its not…

a simple test to see why this kind of modification fails is take one of those adjustable beam flashlights… you’ll notice how the bulb moves back and forth when you turn the reflector… thus either giving you a flood pattern or a spot beam pattern.

same effect with the headlights when you change its horizontal filament positioning. and it ends up being a low beam / high beam effect instead.

i c… so either find a bulb with the filament going parallel with the edge of the tube or just get H4H…

if so for H4H is there a good value place to get them

thanks

both H4H and H4 have axial filaments but the filaments are not located at the same distances.

anyways you can check ebay or password:jdm

Bringing this thread back, i’m going to try this method out and save me some money, i just came back from the junk and found a pair of h4 from a 92-95 civic, gonna cut these once i get the h4h password jdm harness. Well keep update

you should off got the harness from the same civic that u got the bulbs from instead of buying them from password jdm thats what I did but I didnt get them from the junk yard i got it from my mother in laws pos  but its cool the pos aint running

I actually did check out the harness, it was all torn up on it. it was no good use at all. the plastic part that has the 3 slots is crack and now only has 2 so I said “F” it. I also went to go look at other eg civics and they was gone. but I’m gonna go with the better password jdm harness where I don’t have to cut anything.

Hehe, he said “a pair of dykes”
