So while delving into my engine bay to redo some grounding I came across this valve coming off the automatic transmission under the battery tray on my 90 DA, it doesn’t seem to lead to anything when I found it, I assumed this is some sort of vent for the transmission but cringed at the thought of all the dirt that can get in through there contaminating my ATF, I put one of those tiny pod filters (you’ve seen them on valve cover vents) on it for the time being but wanted to see what you guys think?
Secondly, I discovered that the main ground coming off the transmission (seen with arrow) was missing about 2 inches of insulation and the wires were just hanging there, in the image you can see the fresh electrical tape I just put over it (I also put some split-loom and extra tape for good measure) is this also normal or did the OEM wire insulation just dry rot and break off? It was bare strands of copper wire where you now see the new electrical tape.
I’m pretty sure that vent leads to the bell housing, not actually inside the transmission.
Edit: nevermind, I think that pipe had a rubber and braided hose that went somewhere, but I don’t recall exactly where. You can find mini air filters that might fit over it.

I went ahead and wedged a tiny pod filter over it, I thought it might be for a transmission cooler, but after further research it does seem to be a vent.
If you use a mirror and look, there should be a tiny rubber plug inside the opening of the vent. The plug is also notched and designed in a way such that as ventilation goes out, contaminants are not allowed in. The plug can be removed with a pick.
