Hi, I found only one good thread about this case, however, it was still not clear to me if it is possible to do a straight swap of type r gearbox internals inot LS gearbox case. (confusing was S1Y1 numbers)
here is the issue. I got 93 GS. i also got type r motor with gearbox etc. Plan to do a swap, however, since type r gearbox is hydraulic, i would like to swap internals of the gearbox and retain cable clutch. can it be done, or I am SOL?
I do not have problem grinding some part of the case to fit the gears, but what troubles me was the mentioning of some ball bearing being way different. so, who can help me without getting me lectured on S1/Y1 numbers. simply GS(LS) gearbox and Type r gearbox internals swapable or not?
thanks for answers in advance
There should be sufficient info out there on this, it just isn’t done very often (i’m not sure why… since imo its one of the best tranny options we have).
In order to put hydro gears into a cable case, the case must be a “YS1” case, which came in 92-93’s. You will need to modify the case a little (grind some material away). I’m unsure exactly where the grinding needs to take place… since I haven’t done this swap yet. However it was my impression that it is fairly intuitive. Compare the hydro case to the cable case, they should be basically the same inside, except for the cable case will have some extra material in one area which needs to be removed.
Try searching again, I think .J. has spoken a little more in detail about the swap.
Thanks Colin, for your input. The problem for me is that my 2g teg is a daily driver. i cannot start taking the gearox apart if I am not sure that type r gears would go in.
It does not make any sense to swap b18C5 into my 2g teg and have old LS gearbox in it.
another question- would LSD also go into LS the case without problems?
You can definitely fit all of the hydro internals into the LS (ys1 only) case. I know a few people who have itr gears (with lsd) in their ys1 cases.
It would not be a good idea to use the LS trans…especially if you have the itr trans.
You could get the conversion kit, I haven’t ever used one, but so far haven’t heard anything bad about them (although I haven’t heard anything really spectacular about them either). Personally I like the idea of swapping internals better. Then it all works exactly like it was designed by honda with no third party modifications or parts. But I’m not saying it not a good idea to use it… it all depends on preference and situation.
