GSR 5th isnt that bad. Geez… any other VTEC tranny 5th gear is pie compared to the JDM S1 5th. All of you going to LS 5ths are WIMPS! ![]()
G2 LS 5th ~ 4000rpm @ 85mph
G3 GSR 5th ~ 4200rpm @ 85mph
ITR 5th ~ 4600rpm @ 85mph
G2 GSR 5th ~ 4700rpm @ 85mph
JDM S1 5th ~ 4900rpm @ 85mph (from my own experience.)
These numbers are thanks to Dan’s little graph he threw out a few months ago. I’m under the impression that these numbers are approximates, of course not considering different wheel diameters.
Mr. RyanK has now set a new standard by proving that the JDM S1 tranny is not a copy of the US ITR tranny, but in fact the JDM YS1 tranny is more similarly geared to the ITR tranny.
Thank you to both ryank and dan for the above information.

lol elmer
thanks for the info!
Hey, hey, hey! Don’t hate on the LS 5th now! Some of us want to be more conservative on the gas consumption than others. Plus we don’t really like cruising at such high rpms and sound like were racing like you J1/S1 folks.
Hm, I just used up a tank of gas… about 75% of it freeway driving (w/ the AC on… yes, I still have AC! haha) cruising around 80mph in fifth gear with my JDM YS1 (~4400 rpm) with a fairly light foot when city driving.
30.5 mpg ![]()
EDIT: (as opposed to the wonderful 14-15 mpg I got at Thunderhill a couple weeks ago)
yeah… i average around 30mpg mixed driving. ![]()
around 28-29mpg on my S1
Yes its true, on those long trips the high rpm does kill the ear drums, you just gotta clean out your ear wax more often, but it is untrue that if your rpm is higher then your gas milage suffers. You gas milage is correlated to how you drive…if you’re crusing on the freeway at a constant rpm, your milage will not differ too much with those trannies having lower FD’s…I’ve had a Y1 before my rebuild, with that 4.26 FD, I manage around the same gas milage as the S1. But with the Y1 would still have to downshift to 4th sometimes to pick up speed. With the 4.4 FD, acceleration is instantaneous on the freeway…you step on the gas and it just goes…I highly recommend the S1/J1/YS1 tranny for those folks who love to shift through the gates…again, these trannies are not for the faint of heart and note you will be making a compromise with revs and sound on the freeway…it helps if you have a pretty quiet exhuast.

so, could I take the fifth gear out of a ITR and put it into my 92 RS? what would I need? please direct me to the solution if it already is posted. thx

I was actually talking about putting a LS 5th gear into the integra type r transmission. it would be bad to go the other way around.
K try this one:

if it doesn’t work try cut and paste into your browser.
Also I have it as a link on my webpage. Click the link below.

why would you want to do that???
so that the revs will not drop so much in 5th and hopefully it will pull better

there’s no reason to pull better when shifting to 5th.

id hate to see what kind of racing you’re doing if you need your car to pull in 5th gear.
this is strictly a race car (ie. World Challenge like, but slower so far), built this year and still developing, on long straights the revs will be 6800 with 115mph, looking for an extra gear that will not drop down so much in torque band, currently drops to 5000 but would prefer 5500
have been looking at gear ratios and just wondering if anyone has experimented
strictly race car? sounds more like stricly go as fast as possible car. hehe.
I got a 96 ITR 5th gear forsale.
