LSD or non-LSD? The non-LSD/gsr diff is much bigger than LSD.
I’ve never had an issue with either. Are you saying that the diff is larger for the non-lsd are you saying that the casing for the diff is larger or the ring gear?
J.
The gsr diff is bigger than type r. Anywho, I’m officially a hydro tranny guy now. I went with the innovative cable to hydro actuator.
The overall diameter of each part is the same, hydro to cable, though you may have found some rogue diff casing that is different from the others that isn’t factory…but I really do doubt it. You also could have used the diff from your cable with the hydro gears in your cable casing and that shouldn’t have been an issue.
Did you post photos of the hydro non-lsd diff? And I apologize for bringing this thread up out of no where, but I have people emailing me if this issue is true and I’ve never seen it before if it is.

The internals were from a 98 gsr tranny. I didn’t want to use the ls ring because it has 64 teeth and the gsr has 66. I’ll take pics later on. I’m tied up right now with the tranny install and obd1 conversion with a b16.
Here is a pic of the YS1 I picked up at the junkyard and the amount of material I removed with the hopes of installing a 98 GSR internals with the diff. I removed quite a bit and the diff still rubbed the casing where I’m pointing with my pen. I compared the gsr diff with the LS and the gsr is bigger. I don’t have pics of the gsr diff because I already put the gsr tranny together and it is ready to be installed in my da9. And I don’t have pics of a type r lsd diff either.
If it needs a shim, it will need a big one. It got to the point where I was no longer comfortable removing any more material and just went with the hydro tranny install.
Alright very good info in this thread. I myself am looking to do same swap. Im going to use a 99 si b16 tranny and put the gears imside my 90 trans. However on the tutorial it said these swaps are only possinle with a 92 93 cable trans. Because the cases are more similar. Can anyond clarify if its possible in the 90 91?

Wow you did shave alot, I wish i had taken a picture of when I did mine to show you how little I had to shave for the type-r LSD.
Anyways, I didnt believe you until now of how much bigger the GSR diff was compared to the Type-R diff. I also compared the LS and the Type-R before installation and assumed the GSR diff would be roughly the same size as the non-LSD LS diff.
AFAIK, only the transmission casings stamped YS1 from a 92-93 will work with the hydro tranny internal swap.
NG,
Now that I look at your photos I see where you went wrong. As you can see in your photo there is a race that cut in the casing for a “sir” clip that it looks like you had installed in that casing but probably removed it to clean out the casing. Those clips are available in different sizes but 90% of the time if the casing is somewhat straight the stock size will work; see the other half of the casing and I think it’s a .114 or something.
If while you’re cutting the casing and you’re test fitting the diff without the washer/spacer in place you’d have to grind down a ton, like it looks like you did. With the spacer, that looks to shim the diff about a hairs width, everything flys right by.

I don’t recall seeing a shim, nor did my hydro have a shim. I’ll check in my parts bin for a shim.
Thanks
Ng
i just did this same swap although im having trouble going into 3rd and 4th. would the shim on the input shaft?
