i have a fully built b18a1 in my 92 and alot of the time I am running sub 200 degree water temps. I was wondering how I can lower the temps? I have the fan wired direct to key on . What else can I do?
what thermostat you runnin, radiator ect.
The more important question is why do you want to lower your temperature? Lower does not mean better. The engine is designed to operate at a certain temperature and running cooler or hotter than that can be a bad thing. If you’re staying within the normal range for your engine, then you shouldn’t be worried. If it’s often getting higher than it’s supposed to be, then you can make some changes to try and bring temps down. Which changes you make just depend on the circumstances.
Having the fan wired directly on all the time is pointless. The fan only needs to run when the car is sitting still or at lower speeds since if you’re up to speed you should be getting plenty of air thru the radiator. At high speeds the fan actually acts to somewhat block airflow. And the fan only needs to be on when the car is hitting that point where it’s getting warm enough to be needed. If the car is below the point where the thermostat is open, then water is not being pushed thru the radiator and cycled thru the engine - thus your fan is doing nothing but trying to cool water which isn’t going into your engine, it’s sitting in the radiator…
i disagree. if you’re pulling air from your engine compartment (not the way the stock intake system was designed, pulling from in front of the rad) then the cooler and therefore denser the air the better, no? 1% hp increase for every 10 degrees drop in intake temp
interesting point about the rad fan though. never thought about the rate at which the fan pulls air through being lower than the rate at which air hits it at higher speeds basically causing a wall for that air. cool shit
Duralast low temp thermostat, ron davison aluminum racing radiator, overflow tank , spal fan and shroud.
remove the duralast just for one thing and how many fans just one or 2 and do you still have a/c you could also get a low temp fan switch.
my buddy had a tranny oil cooler installed a while ago on his civic, maybe there’s one for our tegs? i dunno how much it would cool down the engine bay,but every bit helps.I work fot a transmission parts company and we sell most of em for 40 to 120.but that’s at cost, the shops we sell em to will mark em up a bit more.Actually i’m pretty sure the ones we sell are universal.so you would just need to figure out how much room you have to spare

i agree about the fan all you gona do is burn your fan motor i know by experience
remove the duralast and replace with???
one fan, no ac and I have buddyclub fan switch

I guess we need to clarify something, because you and I are talking about different things.
I am purely talking about engine temperature - temp of the metal, fluids…etc. the temp that your water temp gauge reads. I assumed this is what the OP was interested in since he mentioned water temp specifically.
You however are talking about air temperature under the hood. Obviously not the same as engine temp. And lowering the temp of the engine itself isn’t going to correlate to an equal temp of underhood air.
So, mi_da_dc_eg, are you talking about underhood air temp, or engine coolant temp? And if you are talking about coolant temp… I ask again, WHY do you want to lower the temp? If you’re not overheating, then I don’t see the point, the engine was made to operate at that temp, so it should be fine. What benefit are you trying to gain by running cooler?
oh, yeah. probably my bad. just saw the title and figured that was what he was referring to. looks like he was talking about engine temp. sorry bout that
Gates makes a 170 degree thermostat.
An engine oil cooler with a sandwich adapter is a good thing for any engine. Redline Water Wetter is a great additive for the coolant, Royal Purple has one out too. If heat is still an issue then hood vents or an aftermarket hood can definitely help. Also heed the advice against a strait wired fan, been there done that and not doing it again (thank you shitty mechanic too cheap to replace a $8 switch).
I came across this yesterday and thought about this thread.

Looks like that switch and a lower temp thermostat would be a good pair
so from what im reading, u dont want ur engine to run cooler, but ur engine bay to stay cooler, when i bosted my integra i noticed alot more heat was staying in the engine bay, so i did a bit of reading and there are a few things you can do, at the cowl near ur firewall there is a rubber moulding that u can remove and it accually help the heat escape out of the engine bay a little better, if u wait at idle until ur fans come on with ur hood closed before u remove the moulding ull notice not much heat is escapeing, but after u remove it ull accually feeel heat always moving out and also it helps the heat escape while ur driving. kept my wipers from freezing too another thing some people do which make it kinda look getto is put washers where the hood bolts to near the firewall at each corner, agian there will be more room for the heat to escape b.c ur hood sits a little higher then usuall. also u can make custom air " director" or dams or w/e u wanna call them under ur car to help scoop up more air under the car to make it move around it more, after doing the moulding and the scoop, after dirivng and boosting and pulling over to open my hoof for a show or w/e it wasnt a huge blast of heat comming out from under it. i also made the air dam to help direct air to my 1/2 rad b/c my intercooler was litterally my full front grill so not enough air was passing through… just a thought, maybe in way off, tell me what u think
You say it’s fully built…n/a or boosted? If it’s n/a I dont really see why you’d need to lower the temp of the engine compartment. Rewiring the fan is a bad idea and will just cause headaches. You’re better off getting a low temp thermostat and getting an aftermarket hood with a scoop or something to vent the heat naturally. But even with the low temp therm you wont see an increase in performance or anything.
