universal cat to stock header fitment ideas

i just bought a skunk2 mega power catback for my 92 rs (2.25" int. diameter). like a kid on christmas i set to work to put it on but the bolts connecting the old exhaust to the cat were completely fused. i managed to get one out with a lot of chemicals and banging with a hammer but the other seemed to be domed with rust and corrosion into the cat. no problem, the cat looked pretty bad anyway (probably original) so i decided to replace that too with a nice (universal) high flow unit from vibrant which i got also to be 2.25" int. diameter. this cat is 13" long so thats a 4.5" gap ive got from the cat to the collector. ill be welding a compatible flange to the skunk2 side of the cat.

ive spent hours here reading about donut gaskets and the rest of it all on these forums but im not sure how to make this work. my favourite solution right now is to cut off the stock collector from the downpipe and using those sturdy exhaust clamps tie a piece of 6" (3/4" cover on both ends) stainless flexpipe and presto. this will also eliminate some of the bottleneck on the stock collector. i do plan on getting aftermarket headers in a while (probably greddy) so i dont mind chopping the old ones if it will work. i dont want to use the dc headers b/c the more i read the more it seems like they are absolute vanilla. not the highest quality vanilla either. im concerned about quality (longevity). i will definitely be building this car all-motor.

so…comments please on how to go about connecting my exhaust system, at least for a while. thanks!!!

use an impact gun to get the bolts off…if you have no access to one just take it to the muffler shop, they should be able to take it out.

Yeah, if you’re gonna get headers, then get good ones. Especially if you want to stay N/A. More power to you; N/A all the way!

Try Megan if you want some quality headers for an affordable price. I’m runnin’ 'em currently & have no compliants, except for the thin-walled sound it made. A little raspy. Some heat wrap on the downpipe solved that.

If you want some quality headers & have the money, try http://www.robearracing.com.
They have Whitfield Tri-Y headers in stage 1 & 2 for all B-series motors. Stage 1 should be great for a speedy DD w/ some track potential. Stage 2 is said to be for "high-revving heavy built B18s & B20s. Seems like a drag app. to me. The stage 1 are $650, so you’d better really want’ em. I may do it when I re-build next year.

Whatever you do, don’t drive DD w/ no cat. I have a low-end torque loss from doin’ that. Noticable, but not devastating to power. Can be annoying @ merge lanes & on-ramps; til 2nd gear is engaged.

bolts

the problem is that the exist. cat flange is pretty much done for. its been thinned from all the rust and im sure its clogged within so replacing it is n/p. the reason i got one by vibrant is that a direct fit high-flow cat (cant remember what company, but apparently a very reputable one around here) was $300. i paid $100 for the universal. a flange will be $20 and the flex probably $30.

does anyone know offhand the outside diameter of the stock collector?

thanks again

headers

i think i may just get headers now and fit my entire exhaust together properly. what do you think of these (not sure whether to get ss or not):

Anyone have the yonaka headers?

i can get the milds for $255 CDN and the SS for $340CDN

Never heard of em. Might be good though. Do a search on them here.
Like I said though, many people including myself like our Megans just fine. Do a search on them too. ALOT of shit on them in these forums. Product Reviews is a good place to start.
