urgent disconnecting speedometer cable from tranny side

So I’ve already managed to pull the cable loose from the cluster side but I can’t get it to budge from the tranny end, I’ve read old threads on here but most aren’t very specific or pics down from age, etc. I’ve been pulling like hell on this thing and feeling around the boot but it doesn’t feel like it wants to come off.

So I managed to get it off, but now i have no idea how I’m going to feed the new cable through the firewall without it getting caught

if you got the cable loose from the cluster side first, that means you broke the plastic clip that holds it to the cluster. Usually, you’re supposed to unhook from the tranny side first. Since that is already done, oh well. For the tranny side, there’s a metal clip holding it in and it’s hiding within that boot. You have to carefully pry/slide it off so it doesn’t fall and disappear somewhere in the area. Since you already got it off, oh well.

Feeding it thru the firewall is exactly what you’re gonna do. It will get caught along the way because you have a very limited view. The trick is to get a thin wire or string and tie it with the old cable before pulling it out completely. That way you can tie the wire/string to the new cable and pull it thru the firewall smoothly.

thanks, I just finished, what a pita. I managed to fish it through using your method, but I used a clothes hanger. It no longer bounces or makes noise. I have no idea how I managed to get it back on the tranny boot without messing with the clip, I just jammed it back in and it worked. I put in a new cable from the dealer so it didn’t matter that I broke the old one.

Awesome! Mine’s making noise again but it doesn’t squeak like how everyone hears it. Another weekend project!
