Very very slight yellowing on my One peice headlights. what can i do??

wassup g2 i have a very slight yellowing on my one peices there about a year and a half old and i live in ny so they go through alot of weather change…what can i do to get them back to the clear condition when i bought them…ive heard about sanding them…or wet sanding them…what grit?? how many?? then clear coat?? or is there an easier way?? its just a minor yellowing nothing crazy is there another option?? let me know thankds

If it is only slight yellowing, a medium compound/polish will clear them up.

If wet sanding, 1200 gritt would clear the oxydation up, then polish to a shine.

ok so compound then polish and then clear coat??

if that doesnt work then 1200 grit, compund, polish, clear coat and they shud be brand new right?

If headlight lenses are kept clean and polished annually, clear-coating them isn’t necessary.

As I said in my first post, a quick polish with an orbital buffer will clear off minor yellowing/oxidation.

okk cool thanks

any thoughts using a 3M protective film after you clean them up?

seems like a good idea, but i havnt read much on it.

There are companies (even car dealers, ie. GMC) that offer clear-bra type 3M plastic that works great.

On a painted surface, naturally, you’ll see the outline if the material is left too long… on a headlight though, I imagine it wouldn’t be as bad.

There is a product out there that the Suby crowd loves, the brand-name escapes me at the moment, but its the same type of stuff…

Edit
I believe the brand is Rock Blocker

I have some paint specks on my one pieces as well as scratches and yellowing. What grit should I start with? Sorry for thread jack. I was thinking that red scothbrite stuff to start with but I dont know the sandpaper equivalent to that.

Red scotchbrite is about a 400-500 gritt.

Start with something smooth, then go more aggressive if you need… starting out with real rough stuff is a sure-fire way to leave heavy scratch marks behind, even after buffing.

I usually say start with 1200 and go to 1500, then buff. You could go down to 1000/800 if needed, but as I said, it can leave scratches that won’t buff out.

edit

And use wet/dry paper and water… water definitely helps.

Isn’t there a clear coat I"ll be removing as well? And I need to get some paint specks off too. I honestly don’t think 800 -1200 grit is going to remove any of that. But thanks for the tip I’ll try starting at 600.

Don’t say I didn’t try to help. Good luck.

post your results please

I’ve done a pair of JDM 1 pieces before… First if its light yellowing, Just try using a plastic cleaner called Meguiars plast X, It’s a little white bottle that is usually by the headlight restore kits at Autozone, O’ Reileys, Pepboys etc… It works wonders on several our cars (my 2007 X-Runner, my moms 2003 Camry, My sisters BF’s 200? Ford windstar)… If that doesn’t work you will probably have to wet sand them.

Make sure it’s WET sanding, and start off with no grit lower then 1000, Then 1500 grit then 2000 grit until it’s all a nice haze. Hit it up with turtle wax polishing compound and scratch remover (it’s all in one), Then go over it with the plast x several times. It will take some elbow grease and patience.

You’re working on clear’ish plastic, you don’t want to do any deep scratches because that shit won’t rub out.

So, basically what I said…

I haven’t used PlastX, but have heard great things about it.

Yep… pretty much what you said but in more detail

Try it out, It’s only like $9 a bottle… It made a night and day difference on the windstar and for the hell of it I used it on a few co-workers cars.

I took the original clear (uv protectant) off of mine with a dual action sander using 1000 grit. Make sure all of the og clear is gone or else there might be a slight ring or halo when the new clear is reapplied. wax it every time the car is washed and there shouldnt be a problem in the future.

i have one headlight too that has a slight dimish brown yellow going on, except for the very corner of the headlight is still white.
i used plastic x on it and did change anything. Maybe the discolouration is from the inside? I’m a bit worried to try sanding it incase i damage the light, i want to do it once and done right since 1 pieces are hard to come by. any pointers?
