Hi everyone,
This is my first post on G2ic. A lot of good information and great people on here. I got my first G2 several months back and have slowly been working on it.
The car wasn’t running when I got it, so when I finally was able to start the motor the engine was making an extremely horrible noise. I pin pointed it down to the alternator with bad bearings. After I fixed that I could actually hear the engine and other things. While the Engine sounds good, Im getting a really nasty grinding noise from the engine bay. Its very apparent in the lower gears like 1-3, but is not very obvious in 4-5 but still a tiny bit. It does go away when I press in the clutch though. The clutch holds well when I switch into gears and apply the gas pretty hard, no inconsistent rise in rpm with little increase in speed - its not slipping.
I can hear it really loud when I down shift to go around a corner and coming out of a corner as well. The video I provided shows you what Im trying to describe. I hope you guys can hear what Im talking about and give me some good feedback. I think its the loudest as soon as I take the first right hand turn on the street and accelerate. One last thing. Before I left to take this vid, I turned on the car and stuck my head down in front and tried to find what I could hear. I swear I heard little inconsistent ticks, like maybe something metal was bouncing around the casing!?
What other things can I do to see what this maybe?
Thanks in advance,
year make and model would help. Do you know if its all original or has it had mechanical swaps done? left or right side more pronounced?:whisper:
wear your seatbelt.
0Usawhim2?:manual:
Its a 90 LS manual , dont know any previous history on it which is unfortunate.
It would seem to me that the noise is more pronounced abit towards the passenger side of the engine bay.
Ive asked around and a decent amount of people are telling me its the throw out bearing, which I think is also called the release bearing.
btw: the seatbelt light is on because I disconnected the pass side auto belt
i’d say the throwout bearing as the noise stops when you disengage the clutch. it has to be something that stops when you press the clutch. i wanted to say that your diff was making that noise, but it would not make sense for it to be that. do you have oil in the tranny?
Yes, Oil in the transmission was the first thing I checked after I started to hear it.
Fresh oil in transmission, still made same grinding noise.
I second the vote for throwout bearing.
Did you formulate your answer from my description of the problem or from hearing the grinding noise from the video?
yes it is confirmed that we have formulated a conclusion to your problem and the answer is… nice job on buying a pos car.
drywater: Thanks, I never really thought about it as being a positive car, but I guess its better then a negative car, or no car at all.:excite:
Times a wasting:P Let us know when you check the pressure plate deflection unit.:horny:
Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks all that have helped me out.
I will be checking out everything sometime this week and will be posting up my findings…hopefully with some pics.
So yeah its been a long ass time, but I thought Id share what the problem was.
I put a brand new clutch kit on there, same issue.
It was the gears within the transmission.
Once I replaced the transmission with a known good working one, there was no grinding noise. Night and day difference.
