VIN's broken down and explained

I’m taking this from my 1992 Acura 2 Volume manual. Here is the break down of a made up VIN.

JH4DA9342NS000001

Broken down into its parts it would look like this.

JH4-DA9-3-4-2-N-S-000001

Here is what all that means:

JH4=Honda Motor Co. LTD Japan Acura Passenger car.

Body Type
DA9: INTEGRA 3D-Hatchback 1800
DB1: INTEGRA 4D-Sedan 1800
DB2: INTEGRA 3D-Hatchback 1700

Door and Trannsmission Type

3: 3door 5speed Manual
4: 3door 4speed Automatic
5: 4door 5speed Manual
6: 4door 4speed Automatic

Vehicle Grade
4: RS
5: LS
6: GS
7: GS (with leather seats and steering wheel cover)
8: GSR (3door only)

Check digit

I don’t know what that means and there is no explination

Model Year
L:1990
M:1991
N: 1992
P: 1993

Factory Code
S: Suzuka Factory

Serial Number

There ya go. The break down for canadian models is the same but the serial number starts with an 8.

I saw your post over on the temp G2 board and wanted to reply but didnt feel like registering. I thought the last six digits in the VIN were what # produced you were commin outta the factory. Like the GSRs that only had like 5000 produced in 92 and less than that in 93?

I’m pretty sure thats what the Serial Number means/is. What number it is off the production line.

Are we still allowed to say:

ARCHIVETHIS

1993 = P :wink:

Awesome. I was pretty sure it wasn’t O.

just a couple of updates to your original post.

vehicle grade there should be one more
LSS = 8 thats whats on my car and its the same number as the gsr.

The engine serial numbers are like this

b17a ca model 2000001
b17a 49st 2300001
b18a ca model 4000001
b18a 49st 4300001

also for canada they dont have an lss they have a RS SE
The RS SE is also a DB1 not a DA9
The GSR is a DB1 too not a DB2

engine serials
B17A 2700001
B18A 4700001

Jon

So this leads me to the question of whats the difference between the DB2 and the DA9?

Hello jtfaoro,

You wrote "The GSR is a DB1 too not a DB2 "

Sorry, but you are wrong the GSR chassis is a DB2 check your Helms manual!

My helms manual says DB1. It could be a typo ive found a few already. Ill check when i get home.

Helms frightens me.:uhoh:

Ok helms is full of crap!!! It says a canadian gsr is a DB1 when it should be a DB2 also it says the RS SE is a DB1. I thought all special editions were DA9. DA9=2dr 1800 DB1=4dr 1800 DB2=2dr 1700. Gawd finally all cleared up. its been pissig me off.

I have the service manual for the 1993 cars. other manuals may have it right.

Jon

Ok sorry, so the Helms manual is wrong my vin reads JH4DB2385PS800217 and is a Canadian 93 GSR!
