Vinyl wrapped roofs

Anybody have any insight on vinyl wrapped roofs?

I have a Captiva Blue DA with a faded roof and don’t want to spend the money at the moment on having it painted. Also, I would rather hold out to repaint the whole vehicle at once. I think I’ve seen prices for the vinyl wrap installed at about $140 or so in my area. The car isn’t on the road yet and don’t want to have that faded roof when it does hit the roads.

Basically, I’m curious on whether the vinyl holds up through various car washes and how long does it last without looking like crap. Anybody have any pics on their DA or just personal experiences with it?

I work for a construction company and two of our f-550 service trucks are vinyl wrapped on the doors. We got them installed at the end of the summer, it’s held up against some pretty mild abuse. I’m thinking about the same thing on my roof and hood.

I would just get the roof resprayed, you said you don’t want to spend the money but you are willing to spend almost $150 to get the same look you could get from a can for $145 less lol. Or you could get automotive paint in a areosol can and respray it yourself for about $40. It might not be perfect but will be very close to the color and if you could find someone to blend the paint for you it would look good

a friend of mine had this done

and its the shit. i am vinyl wrapping my next car. just do the whole car.

I have no experience with painting, so I don’t plan on buying a can of spray paint and spraying my roof. If that’s the case, I’m sure it would come out looking worse than it does now with the faded spots. I plan on getting a quote at the body shop for getting the roof sprayed, but I think on one of my older DA’s I was quoted $300 or $400 for the roof alone. That’s why I said I didn’t want to spend the money at the moment. The $150 I could do as temporary fix for the problem. I would rather spend the other $150-$200 on performance/suspension upgrades for the time being.

Thanks for the other replies. The FD looks pretty good, I’m sure that cost him a decent amount. I think full vehicle wraps go for like $2k or so.

i’m on the fence about how that looks… but i’m with HB420.

OMG!

I saw “vinyl wrapped roof” and thought NOOOOOO! Don’t do it! Lol. Good idea to do it the way you are thinking though.

It can be good and last for about 5yrs or more or last 6 months, it really comes down to the quality of the film they use. I had my last project car wrapped in vinyl from the front fender to the rear quater panel on both sides, it lasted me about 2yrs before i started to notice it fading turning cloudy from its original deep glossy look. Dirt started to stick to it and at the end its super expensive to remove ones it dries up and cracks. You cant peel it off in one peice since the film is dried up so it comes off in small cracked strips. it took me 2 weeks 3hrs everyday to get it off and the paint under the graphics was trashed, most of the clear came off and so now I have dried up clear flaking off…

so lesson is get the graphics for no more than 6 to 12 months

Great! Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for. I haven’t come to my decision yet, but your reply with personal experience really helped.

yeah just try not to use strong chemicals like degreaser when washing it and try to keep it in the shade when ever possible. Look for signs of fading or cracking and pull it off before it turns into a nitemare.

another idea is carbon fiber wrap, 3m makes them and also in different color.

ive been contemplating the 3m carbon fiber wrap, anybody have any experience with it? any experience with application?

Just do an actual CF cap, rather than a rap. Would be more durable.

Don’t have any pic, but looks real nice, it’s been over a year and no bubbles or fading

I can’t believe its been 5 years since I bought that car from you, Yeyo!

LOL, yeah it’s been a while. I’ve been through a 200SX SER, DA9, FA5, and now another DA9 since then. A couple bikes too, but that’s another story… Are you still in a DA?

Just saw your thread with pics. Roof looks like it came out pretty good. Did you install it yourself?

Yeah I still got a da. 93 rs with a built b16 and 60-1 turbo. Almost done!
