VTEC Sputtering

I have a 92 db2 with the original b17. Just week I began to notice that when I engaged vtec, that it began sputtering. Now I am not hearing the crossover. Any advice on what may be the problem?

check if it has oil… coolant and of the speedo is working correctly. it also can be the vtec solenoid but you can test that

Check oil level and quality.

If your tach and speedo are functioning properly, your VSS is likely fine… but you can check that the cable is installed securely.

It can be the screen/filter that is in between the vtec solenoid and cylinder head. There is a rubber gasket and a metal filter that will build up debris… especially if it is the original filter on a 20yr old motor. If you pull it apart to clean it, you may as well order the gasket/filter and replace it.

Other than that, it’s hard to say… what’s the condition of the wiring harness? Any frayed or cracking wires on the vtec component wiring?

Part# 10 on the diagram is the metal filter…
Part# 12 on the diagram is the gasket and filter…

It has oil. It was working at the beginning at the last oil change a few months ago. I just changed the oil last night and tried to engage vtec on the way in work. It still sputtered. The speedo does get jumpy around 60 mph

I replaced those parts recently. Around Christmas time to be exact. I do have an oil leak from the gasket between the head and distributor. The wiring harness is intact.

you may have to check oil pressure… and the spedo cable is probably bad

I’ll look into those 2 areas.

definitely check oil pressure. if you have a clogged screen or a weak oil pump vtec could be bouncing on and off and would never flash the dummy light for low oil pressure
